    Update on vertical gardening

I've seen pics of that way to grow strawberries all over the place, but never had anyone actually post how it works. Glad to see it's turning out well! I finally just gave up the strawberry beds & planted them as groundcover in my flower beds. They definitely stay much more weed-free that way!

    How 'bout that Moon!

@thistlebloom - My sister moved to Newcastle, England last summer - it's almost to the Scotland border. They had to buy blackout curtains right away because her son was up with the sun - 5 a.m.! Of course, the winter was pretty miserable with only about 6 hours of daylight every day. I never...

    Shrubs for total shade

Are rhodies hard to grow in the midwest? I thought they were ones that liked acidic soil.

    Shrubs for total shade

I was looking at climbing hydrangea, but with it being a flowering plant, I wasn't sure what I'd see from it. Glad to hear it could work out. I was considering boring old Boston ivy. I like the idea of cranberry, too. @Smart Red - I saw that pic on Pinterest, and I thought it could be a...

    Landed my dream job

I suggested that they just pay me in plants, but I'm sure they knew I'd take home way more in plants than I'd ever make in my paycheck! :D

    Your 'Next' Nice Day

Oh my gosh, I've got so much to do! Since I'm working Sunday, I've got to make Saturday really count. My plan is to clean out the goat pen and maybe the meaties, too (their pen gets nasty so quick!). I'm hoping to have the last remaining plants to get into my flower bed, and then mulch...

    Landed my dream job

Too bad it's only a couple of days a week! I'm working at a local garden center! They are paying me to talk to people about plants!! And the best part - I get plants at cost! The only trouble is that they run a tab instead of making me pay right away for every purchase. This is going to get...

    Shrubs for total shade

I also saw this, which I thought would be interesting - it would give the bulk of a shrub, but I could fill it with perennials: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QQdXymLxB4U/U4ePbgOREjI/AAAAAAAA3m8/kJDjjoJCImc/s1600/ed9b2b856f5a6295199e62e6f197085b.jpg. I'd just need to find some pretty sizeable planters.

    Shrubs for total shade

Hello hello hello! Long time, no see! I've been busy, but am dying to start on a new garden - probably the most challenging one yet. I'm landscaping the basement walkout, which is on the east side of our house. There is an ugly concrete retaining wall that I need to beautify. The only trick...

    Growing Crack-Free Heirlooms

I've decided to take my summer hobby of selling at the farmer's market more seriously this year to see if I might be able to make a little money at it. Since the big sellers have the "usual" stuff covered, I'm going to see if I can grow some things that are a little more unusual. Not bok choy...

I'm officially a master gardener intern!

Thanks guys! @SprigOfTheLivingDead - I'd love to be a master naturalist, too, but one thing at a time. :) What does that entail?

I'm officially a master gardener intern!

Thanks! @thistlebloom - I'm not sure yet on the community service. I definitely want to help out at the 4H fair. The MGA here runs the flower show. I'm not sure if I'm up for a big project or I'd like to do some of the smaller stuff that the MGA does.

I'm officially a master gardener intern!

So this past fall, I finally did something I've been talking about for a while: becoming a master gardener. I finished the class portion, and now I need to do 35 hours of community service to earn my master gardener status. The classes were definitely interesting, but I'm more excited to start...

Anybody here grow lettuce inside in the winter?

I was thinking I might be able to grow spinach in a sunny windowsill inside my house, but it still doesn't seem to be enough light. I have grow lights I could put on them, but I don't think it would be worth it. I'll be interested to hear if you have some success with it. :)

We saw it here! It was very cool! DH snagged a welding mask from work, so we had a good view.

    Winter Kitchen Gardening

Are mung beans the fat ones? I LOVE those, and Kroger doesn't sell them anymore because apparently there was an ecoli outbreak with them years ago. We have a seed sprouter, so I may need to try that! I'm going to see if I can keep some spinach going on the windowsill this winter. :) We'll...

    Bird Sightings 2014 - 2015

I'm not sure what was going on, but this weekend there were at least a dozen Eastern bluebirds in my yard, swooping around and making a racket! Anyone know what they might have been up to?

    Bring Plants Indoors

Wait...you're supposed to prepare the plants before you bring them indoors??? :hide JK - I know you're supposed to spray them off & stuff, but I can't say I've ever done that. Haven't had any problems...yet. *knock wood*
