My guess would be some kind of Rhaphiolepis or " indian hawthorn"
There are probably 100's of varieties, but mine have grey bark, the same leaves (a few turn reddish in the fall) and white to pink flowers in the spring.
Thanks:) I had about 80 types of roses before I moved, but I think I'm down to about 40 of my favorites right now. Many are still waiting in pots for the perfect spot LOL.
Good idea about digging a pit for the bin during the hottest part of the summer. Even in the shade it gets way hot here.
I asked for worms last year for my birthday and Christmas. No one believed me  So, I got some for myself!
Today I picked up a "worm starter kit" from the local worm farm. Really nice folks :D They've been raising worms for over 30 years now. I got a large flat of established adult worms...
If you want to grow apples and live in So. CA or other areas where you have issues with heat and low chill requirements
Check this site out: http://www.kuffelcreek.com/applelist.htm
They experiment with all sorts of apples and think "outside the box" of chill requirements when trying new...
I got mine from http://www.treesofantiquity.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=344.
It is the also called the "redveined crab", but has apple sized fruit. It is nearly extinct in the wild. I asked the nursery if it had any disease problems and they said that it is a very...
These are my favorites so far:
Honeycrisp :drool Great apple, good storage and very disease resistant. It also can grow in much warmer/ low chill areas than originally thought even So. California.
I also have:
Arkansas Black- heirloom apple hardy and healthy.
Sierra Beauty- heirloom apple...
Oh, I so know what you mean about the crazy drivers. The elementary school where my kids will be going to is about 8 miles from us. But, I have driven right by it at 8am and 3pm a few times. Utter chaos. :duc Since it is a "country" school lots of parents drop their kids off because they are...
Beautiful poem :) I agree with you on the almost silly "modern human's" need for exact time, but our world runs by it now. It is nice to have the freedom to wake, rise, eat and sleep by just the natural rotation of the earth and seasons.
Too bad my kids are now approching school age. Soon I'll...
If you want to keep it... look up dovecotes. Small dovecotes look more like a large bird house on a pole than a chicken coop with a run. It might be happier roosting in that at night and be safe from owls. If you built it on a slick metal pole it would be safe from ground predators as well.
It...
I believe that plant patents only last 20 years and it can take 20 years of work to develop a plant worth patenting. Especially when working with fruits that take several years to produce. Say you take plant A and cross with plant B and plant 1000's of seedlings and then after a 10 year trial...
The local Nursery here in zone 9 (N. California) is selling Fall "cool season" tomaotes. I haven't tried it, but was thinking about it. I think they might work better if you had a covered porch or green house to keep the rain off of them. My tomato plants usually look ok until December too...
It kind of looks like Columbine. Aquilegiea canadensis has so many cultivars that they leaves and flowers can look a bit different. But, it looks like columbine to me.

I have mine in 1/2 wine barrels because I didn't have time to get a garden started this year.
Sweet 100= loads of fruit and I'm eating handfuls every day (no shocker there :D)
Yellow cherry (Bonnie's plants/Home depot)= tons of fruit NO TASTE :(
Started late:
Black Krim=very few greens...
I got mine when I was working at a nursery and part of my job was ordering plants. I loved to order new varieties of plants and not the run of the mill annuals and shrubs. I ordered 20 1gallon of the Copper canyon daisy plants and my boss ended up asking me to put them on clearance because he...
I've always loved the smell of plants even the "stinky" ones. The herbs smell as wonderful to me as roses :) Even when I was little I liked to touch, rub or even crush plants to experience the aromas of the oils. One of the most "stinky" plants I ever grew was a perennial marigold (Tagetes...
I brought some of my overflowing herbs inside to enjoy in a vase:)
I wanted to use more lavender, but the bumble bees were enjoying it so much that I felt bad cutting it. But the basil, sage and rosemary were getting way over grown and I can only use so much in cooking.
A picture of one of...
I've found two "wind or sun" spiders that are related to the giant camel spiders in Iraq in my house this summer. They look almost like a scorpion, but have no tail. Boy now they are a creepy looking spider. :ep
I haven't seen many black widows since moving to our new house, but we've got huge wolf spiders! Some of the biggest I've seen! Here's tonight's "visitors" I found IN the house!
A huge hissing beetle
A medium sized wolf spider.
I need to re-think my mulching as well. I mulched a small flower bed with medium to large bark mulch. My girls loved digging in it and now every single hen has bumble foot in some degree. Even on their toes. No sharp areas in the coop, a dry run and good roosts.
The two hens that were broody...
