It's not just time that helps.......

My dad came to gardening later than most. Out of the clear blue sky he became infatuated with growing roses, tho he had never shown a lick of interest in growing anything before that. When I moved into a tiny little abode of my own, he brought rose bushes and planted them in my postage stamp...

    It's been an "eternity".......

I am so sorry to hear of your terrible loss, but I am glad you had the opportunity to tell her goodbye. Her passing most certainly was eased by having you there.

Help our monarchs. Plant a milkweed

I have lots of milkweed in the part of our property that is uncultivated. We've only seen a couple monarchs, tho, probably because we are not in their main area. I used to live on the Calif Central Coast, where they stop along their migrations. It is an awesome and astonishing sight to see...

    Are compost tumblers a myth?

I looked into those compost tumblers and all I can say is.....it will be a very cold day in H-E-double hockey sticks before I spend $400 to turn leaves and fruit peels into anything other than 24 carat gold.

PVC Trellis as of Aug 28, 2010

I want a bunch of those oh-so-pricey copper teepees and tuetors, but they aren't in the budget. I'm going to experiment with PVC pipe and some metallic copper paint that I got on the "oops" table at Lowe's for $2. If it comes out nice, I'll post a pic. If not, I'll toss the whole mess into...

Planting tomatoes in the Fall? California.

I tried it when I lived in Santa Barbara, but results were not good. Not hot enough and the days are too short for good fruit development.

    UPDATE: Argh!!! Children!!!

Gawd, I would be so mad! Looks like lots of good advice here, but here's one more for ya. Go to their parents and tell them that the whole property had to be treated with poison because of vermin, and that it is dangerous to kids and pets. Beseech them to keep the kids away so they don't get...

    What should every garden have?

Grow the stuff you like to eat, but that costs a lot at the grocers. "Real" tomatoes can be pricey, and they are sooooo wonderful fresh from the garden. Herbs, as someone above said. Blueberries because they cost way too much at the store but are relatively easy to grow. Raspberries, for the...

    Am I stealing???

There is a beautiful demonstration garden not far from me. I've often wished I could "pinch" (pun intended) a stem that is out of symetry or a small branch. I've never done it though because I always think of the consequences of what that garden would look like if 10-15 people a day did that...

Paper industry tests genetically altered trees...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100607/ap_on_bi_ge/us_food_and_farm_bioengineered_eucalyptus Hooboy! I have seen what happens to eucalyptus trees in a wildfire. Because of the high oil content, they "explode" and throw flaming embers for dozens of yards. I don't like eucalyptus trees to begin...

    Beeline to Extinction

I've had cancer twice, too, Lady. There's no knowing where it came from but I'm guessing that the big trucks that drove through my neighborhood spraying for mosquitos several times each summer when I was a kid, didn't help my health any. I shudder to remember that droves of us kids used to...

    Information on Bees

At www.fabricdirect.com you can buy a 40 yard bolt of 72" wide nylon netting for $26, or 50 yard bolts of 50" wide tulle for $26. The tulle is a closer weave than the nylon netting. At my local store, either fabric is under $2 a yard. To me, the choice is cabbage with poison on it, or...
