Another tomato finally has flowers, this one Glacier. Two others have buds. I set up the sprinkler for the tomato cucumber garden today, gave them a good drink. Glad I have a good well.
Temp hit 91.5 today.
Looks like we're also back in the slim to none chance for rain scenario as well. I fertilized all my veggies yesterday. Still only have flowers on my 2 tumbling toms. The cukes, zukes and pumpkins are doing pretty well though, got more than one leaf now on most of them. The 2 watermelon plants...
I've got 2 watermelon plants. One I grew inside and one I planted next to it when the others I stated inside failed. I seeded another hill but so far nothing. I'm thinking it's too late now, so I hope I get at least one ripe fruit. I have never ever gotten a ripe watermelon. Got close once and...
Glad no birds were lost the other night.
Had a good time at Chickenstock in Lansing yesterday but it was exhausting! Was the drive that was probably the worst of it though I was only a passenger. 3.5 hours one way is long but I'll do it again next year if I can.
A friend and I have been having...
Did you notice the Mexican restaurant finally opened? Over there on 23 just south of the curve that Sav-a-Lot sits on? I picked up a take out menu, looks very tasty and reasonably priced. Was quite crowded at lunch time. Have to actually go in and eat there soon, just waiting a couple more weeks...
High in Barton City today was 97.3.
Spent the day in Alpena grocery shopping and having lunch with my neighbor. With my truck having no a/c it was pretty toasty. Had the cooler with 2 ice bottles in it and the frozen food still thawed! Cooler weather coming in tomorrow. Maybe I'll be able to do...
I'VE GOT TOMATO FLOWERS! I'VE GOT TOMATO FLOWERS! :weee Only on 2 plants but that's something. Both are Tumbling Toms, one yellow, one red. Now that I think back, I do believe they were my earliest ones last time I them. Only a month now till my first tomato? ACK! So far away!
we had a storm last night, too, lots of flashing, mostly a soft rain though, worst of it was to our south, like the one we had earlier in the day. Kind of weird getting rain left and right now when we wouldn't have any for weeks at a time.
I've had garter snakes all over the place this year...
We did the Cornish x's a few times and finally decided this year to switch to regular breeds. I got some dark cornish and am planning on keeping one of those roos and seeing what I come up with using some dual purpose hens. (buckeyes, wyandottes, etc) I know I'm not going to get anything like...
Ack, don't worry about the typos, we can tell you're literate. BYC used to be like this forum. I suspect as there are no where near as many people here as there that there is no point in bringing this place into the 21st century.
I put in my first 3 blue berry bushes this year. Put them in the...
I don't really have a plan to weigh or count anything, but I have created a drawing showing what's planted where so I can see which ones just do better. It's kind of iffy because I've really got only one of a few of the tomatoes so if something happens to a plant I won't know for sure. Not a...
The rain up here in Michigan has been decidedly odd. first we had more than 3 weeks of heat and drought, then we got a deluge of about 2 inches, then it did it again for a couple more weeks then we got maybe half in inch. Yesterday Grand rapids finally got some rain but by the time it got here...
Sorry for you loss. My grandfather was the gardener but died back when I was a teenager many years ago. I do have peonies from his original plants though, apparently my dad, his son got them and then my younger sister took care of them and divided them and gave me some a few years ago. It's kind...
Dang, I've lost count how many deer fly bites I've got. Living in a swamp you'd think the skeeters would be more of a nuisance. Nope, it's the deer flies, only have 2 months of them though, by mid August they're usually had their season and start dropping off. Yeah, I know, up here, that's the...
What kind of pickling cukes you growing? I've got Bush Pickle, National Pickler (I think), and Albion is my new one to try this year. There may be another but I can only think of the slicer names at the moment. Dang my memory is just shot. Most of them finally have their first real leaf though...
Welcome Bob! :welcome
Yup, it was me. I like gardening sort of. Started when I was a kid with my older sister, my dad of course, would buy all the stuff we needed but older sis and I were the labor. I've had gardens on and off over the years and every time I moved to a new place I'd start...
Alpena and points north seem to have frost advisories. Not me, yet, and they've raised the predicted low from 41 to 46 which is good but that's Alpena's predicted low and they still have a frost warning. I've covered my beans and sort of covered my tomatoes, walls of water without the water...
They're talking a low of 41 for the next 2 nights!:( What's the chance of that coming with a frost do you think?
There aren't any warnings near me, but I've noticed sometimes in early spring or late fall they'll post a warning after dark which is pretty useless when it comes to covering plants.
