Fish fry was great, It was walleye caught by a bunch of my nephews. Also french fries done right in a fryer. My MIL made her own coleslaw which is the only one I can eat because I hate cabbage but hers doesn't taste like cabbage. My sourdough wheat bread accompanied it and my MIL's homemade...

HI Jared! Nice to have another person pop into the thread. I love bleeding hearts but don't have any. Don't really know why. I tried astilbe one year, they didn't make it through winter. I have problems with shade loving plants, I think it may be my soil, since I live in a cedar swamp it's...

When we moved here 12 years ago there was no phone line so it cost us $900 to have them bring one in under the 1/4 mile driveway. We needed it for dial-up and we didn't own cell phones. I think it was pretty much all 2 year contract phones back then so in the long run, we thought, the phone line...

47 chicks at once! :th I've got 25 more coming first week of June and the others will still be too young to eat, etc, so I guess in June I'll be overrun. :th Never really thought about it that way before. Too dang chilly and windy today to do anything outside but walk the dogs. I did finally...

I have not planted any lettuce yet, but I really need to get the rest of that garden weeded, raked and planted with lettuce. Do you know, can it survive hard freezes because it seems to drop to 28 every other night here. This would be early for me to plant it outside simply because there is no...

THANK YOU It was getting lonely in here! My snow peas started sprouting yesterday. I planted sweet peas by the front deck. Temp is 52 right now and sunny. Very nice day. May go plant more peas or lettuce, but right now I'm looking at vinyl tiles on line. Need to re-floor the great room...

    Cheap Azalea, in the ground!

What's the usual farthest north zone for azaleas? I'm tired of stuff getting nipped in the bud by late frosts, buddleia won't grow here in zone 4, my sister had nice bushes in zone 5 in central MA. I never looked into them because I know deer eat them but with my 2 dogs the deer seem to have...

Good morning. Nicer day here today, already 41, sun poking in and out from behind the clouds. Got some sweet peas soaking in warm water. Now I MUST dig up a spot for them. Along the deck I think. That will at least get the spade fork up near the chicken coop. I really need to muck it out...

    Snow/Spring????

The bit of snow we got is melting, and there is finally a little sun peaking out now and then and it's 41 degrees. Already so much nicer than yesterday. I may dig up a spot to plant some sweet peas today.

It is snowing. The high is supposed to be 45? It hit 37 and has dropped to 32. I don't think so.

100% chance for rain today, was 100% chance for snow so I am not going to complain! No sign of my snow peas sprouting yet. Glad I didn't plant lettuce yet, I think dropping below 30 every night couldn't be good for it.

    Snow/Spring????

Went to bed last night with a forecast of 100% snow for today. woke up with 100% chance of rain. :bow Still a gloomy cold day but that's a 100% improvement in my book!

    Snow/Spring????

Frustrating, isn't it momofdrew? I live in northeast Michigan right below the 45 parallel and those 80 degree temps played havoc with everything! I wouldn't be surprised to get snow again before real spring takes off but I'd rather not. We've just been lucky that it's been so dry (though not in...

Well, while it reached 55 today and the sun is finally popping out for a second or two, the temps are already dropping toward the third freeze since the heat wave ended. It's awfully windy out there so I doubt my sheets will stay on long. I'm only going to cover the 3 lilacs and 3 of my smallest...

    Pole vs. Bush Beans

My favorite beans to grow for the past few years have been the bush varieties Jade and Masai. Nice yields of long thin beans for several weeks, or at least till my frost hits as I'm lucky to get one crop in zone 4. I have tried some of the others in the past, can't be sure but I think they were...

    Ooops...

I've got a lilac that's never bloomed and looks to be the same this year. It's the one that's purple with the white edges? Forget the name.. sensation or something like that. Got a peony that's never bloomed either, sorbet. I dug it up last year and raised it a bit to see if that helps. All my...

    Tomatoes for the Garden!

My tomato seeds started sprouting a couple days ago. :weee The only ones not up are the yellow pear which were iffy as the seeds are almost 10 years old. No biggie if they don't sprout, I mainly like them picked green for pickling, they split way too easily on me and are so-so in flavor. I also...
