At night, when the house is quiet, I sometimes hear a little rustling from the kitchen. That really alarmed me at first, as I thought mice might have gotten in.
Nope - it was birds. DW had mounted steel mesh outside over the exhaust vent, because she thought (perhaps rightly) that birds might...
I love digitalis too. Didn't realize they were biennial when I bought them - so mourned when they died. But 4 healthy seedlings popped up last year, so I'm looking forward to a good show. I've got to plant another clump in the off year, so they (hopefully) alternate continuously.
Peonies...
Hmmm... our gardening subconscious at work? Planting tiny yeast/seeds, kneading flour/soil, and getting to watch both get taller if all goes well. Do both at once, make an herb bread - loaves & leaves.
Memories..., I just talked myself into baking bread tomorrow. With the house all...
Haven't seen the site; but will payments be changing hands via the site? If so, that 's' will be important... not many would enter payment info without the safety of a secure site.
Our weather forecast has changed a little; the night temps will now be a little warmer. The not-so-great news is that it looks like we'll never get above -10 C. for the next week.
This morning it took me 2 hours to dig out from the storm. We got about 12" total, but there were places where it...
Blizzard conditions here; up to 12" of snow predicted (we've had at least 6" already). and windy. Most churches & many businesses closed early today. and most non-essential activities canceled Saturday morning. I shoveled & snowblowed as much as I could before the wind picked up (to make it a...
Last week, with strong winds forecast, I drove out to the rural garden to see if the hay mulch on the garlic was still firmly in place (it was). While there, I collected some pods from the volunteer Martynia. One of its common names is "devil's claw" - for good reason. The ripe seed pods shed...
If stevia doesn't work out, you might want to try monk fruit sweetener. For me, that is the only no/low cal sugar alternative I've tried that doesn't taste "off", or have health and/or digestive consequences.
And I love dried cranberries in either hot or cold cereal, in place of raisins. A...
Yeah, I'm used to it - like an ache that you just get used to after awhile. And Winter thus far has been less brutal than usual, so I count my blessings. Still not a big fan of cold weather though, and don't do any winter sports (unless shoveling counts). I wish I could just get fat & sleep...
Pretty much the same story here @Carol Dee ... but the next round of snow will be easier to shovel than the slush we have now. The temps will be really crashing though; when Winter is late arriving, it hits like an ice hammer. It seems we will have a winter after all. 🥶
Hey, maybe we could solve the plastic bag issue by getting all hotels & institutions to donate their old pillow cases. Bet I could fit a lot of groceries into one of those! Maybe too much (grunt, oh my back).
I prefer to hand out food, rather than money which might be spent on drugs or alcohol. In winter weather, I sometimes give someone a hot meal from a fast food place across the street. I don't wish to inadvertently enable or support self-destructive behavior. Sadly, that is often the reason that...
They are grown both for food, and for preservation... their beauty, and watching the hummingbirds which are attracted to them, are just pleasant fringe benefits. :) Because my climate is not ideal for runner beans & I grow so many other beans, I seldom eat the snaps; but will enjoy a meal or two...
It sometimes flies with the spoon too. But since I'm holding the middle of the spoon & pointing the curve downward, most of the kernels bounce off my fingers & fall into the bowl. After the first row, successive rows 'unzip' easily by running the spoon down the row between the kernels.
