Merry Christmas to all of my friends here! 🎄 ⛪
Much to my astonishment, after much discussion, all of my family was able to gather together - in spite of a last-minute illness of one Granddaughter of the son who was hosting. :( She felt terrible, that she was wrecking Christmas for everyone...
Its been close to record high temps over the Christmas weekend - a blessing for all of those who were on the road. Was able to gather with all of my children, grands, and great-grands on Sunday. A really big rain event is just now moving in, but it looks like no winter weather - yet. This same...
This sounds like a perfect example of similar-looking seed coats on very dissimilar beans. Which is the reason I make a point of not growing two similar looking beans - or even similar-colored seed coats - in the same year. It would be a difficult cross to undo.
So it came as a shock to realize...
Well, my brief period of temporary seasonal employment has ended, so I can get caught up on the remaining 2023 bean results.
In a year with a lot of disappointments, there were also some surprising successes. One of my ongoing projects is a search for day-neutral varieties of historically...
I contest that. It is pretty self evident that only an edamame soybean can be given that name. (Or a lentil - but names are meant for people, and who actually grows lentils in their garden? ;))
My apologies for only now noticing this post; my time online has been limited lately. Welcome to TEG from Wisconsin! I look forward to seeing more of your beautiful photos in the future.
:welcome
Well believe it or not, I did save seeds other than beans this year. In fact, the members of the gourd family did really well.
Two Chinese bitter melons that I have been dehybridizing for years. "Unknown Chinese #1" (left) is a long one; I'm still selecting it for length & high yield...
Me: "Here we have a custom of exchanging seeds."
Of course, any Interstellar Seed Exchange would have to go through APHIS. Customs going through Customs. Wouldn't want to end up with some carnivorous space kudzu. (See British TV show "The Avengers", season 4, episode 11: "Man-Eater...
2023 beans continued:
"Yancheng Bush", a true-bush 'footlong' bean. Sent to me by a Gardenweb member in Texas, who got them from her father in Yancheng, China. I sent some back to her a few years later, when all of her seed was destroyed. This bears heavily, and very quickly - 50 days to...
It looks like some of that seed was crossed. I've grown "Trionfo Violetto" before (might even still have some old seed laying around). Beige with some light violet specking is typical fresh, but they turn brown with age. I had the same thing happen with new seed of "Kew Blue", which is similar...
Yes, they began pecking the seeds out of the pods. At first I thought it might be mice; but some of the pods hung far away from the trellis, and were opened from the bottom up. I saw the birds in that trellis, among the foliage, several times. I often see birds perched at the top of my...
2023 "beans" continued - yardlong beans. These are all a sub-species of cowpeas; but they tend to have more elongated seed - and much longer pods - than the short-but-fat seeds of cowpeas bred for dry use. Given that they have different centers of origin, I alternate between them in my gardens...
2023 "beans" continued. The Vignas were less affected by the weather than Phaseolus beans.
"Kirby" cowpea. Came to me in a swap 2010, in a Baker Creek envelope labeled "Kirby's Whippoorwill", but SSE lists it by the shorter name. Rambling 4-6' vines. This had the most fertile soil of the 3...
Only twice have I had weevils - once from a swap, and once from a fairly large, well known heirloom seed company. Since I quarantine all new seeds in freezer bags, the bugs never escaped in either case. I informed the seed company; they sent me new seed - also infested. When I informed them of...
