    Indispensable apps

I also use the notes feature that came with the phone. It is easy to pull up and I can dictate to it if I am home with wi-fi, or type into it if I am out. It syncs to my MacBook wirelessly (with no effort on my part), so sometimes if I need to make a note on my phone when I'm going somewhere...

    Cornsalad greens

No, they died out before they were big enough to eat. Sorry - I'm not much help, but this is such a little known variety, I was happy to hear of someone else considering it. I looked at my garden plan and I do have a small spot I could try it again.

    Cornsalad greens

I've grown them. Unfortunately they didn't do too well. They came up but fizzled out before producing much. I think it got too hot for them. The collards didn't do well that summer either. I think I have them in my garden plan again for this year - we'll see if they do better.

    Dreaded cucumber beetle question.

@baymule I did go ahead and google them. I bet we get them in this area but I've never seen them because I don't grow any of the crops you mentioned. I certainly have enough of my own pests to deal with but I'm thankful not to have to deal with these - by all accounts they are nasty little...

    Dreaded cucumber beetle question.

Oh wow - have definitely never seen one of them! Do they visit plants other than cucumbers?

    Dreaded cucumber beetle question.

Ah well as a disclaimer I should admit that I don't grow cucumbers or squash and don't actually know what a cucumber beetle or squash bug is! When I talked about picking pests off, I was generalizing. I do spend about an hour a day picking a variety of caterpillars, horn worms, aphids etc off...

    Indispensable apps

Oookkaayyy….yeah, that's the problem. If you get one through your provider you have to renew the contract, usually for two years, and they force you to get the data as well. However if you buy the phone outright like I did on eBay, the provider has far less leverage and cannot force you to get...

    Indispensable apps

What would the extra $40 be for? I bought my iPhone on eBay. It was a refurbished model and about half the price of buying one new. I don't have data so it didn't cost any extra on my plan than my old phone. At home we have wi-fi so I can still use all the features that a data user can use...

    Indispensable apps

No, my app is called Sunrise and Fall. The first time I used it I had to tell it my zip code and now all I have to do is press on the app icon and it loads and tells me the sunrise/sunset times for the day, plus the number of hours/mins of daylight. It also has a calendar, so you can swivel it...

    Dreaded cucumber beetle question.

I'm not familiar with Neem but I do know of Pyrethrin - isn't it a poison? I don't like to spray any poisons around my property at all, since I worry about the poultry getting sick while they are free-ranging (even if they aren't allowed in the fenced-off veggie garden) plus it kills the...

    Indispensable apps

I am pretty new to a smart phone and I didn't want to overload it with apps. That said, I found one that gives me the sunrise/sunset time for my zip code and I do enjoy checking on that. This time of year it is nice to watch the days get longer…. I guess I haven't found any yet that I...

It seems I need a responsible escort....

Hmmm….I guess I must be the only one immune to chicks LOL. I've raised so many chicks that now when I hear the chicks cheeping at the feed store, all I can hear is a lot of mess and work  Last year I hatched a ton and I think I burned myself out on raising them. At one point about half...

    Veg Plot

I agree that you will need to fence them out if you want to eat any of the produce yourselves. Fresh chicken manure is hot so you will get the best results from letting it age a little. I would try to fence them out 6-8 weeks before planting. You might also find that tomatoes planted in soil...

    Double-Dug vs. No-Dig

My chockens aren't interested in eating roly polies. I've had a few that would eat slugs but most of them don't like them. We don't get snails here so I've no way to tell about them, but I imagine the ones that eat slugs would also eat snails and the rest wouldn't. We also don't get earwigs...

Help us pick a name for our farm!

I am so bad at thinking of names that I posted a poll on another forum soliciting suggestions. What it came down to for me was looking at what my property contains and using something on the property to come up with a name. Do you have a pond, a "lone pine" tree, "twin willow" trees, a hedge...

    First signs of spring

I started with 6 (2 drakes, 4 ducks) and hatched a bunch last year. I think at one point I had around 30 but I butchered most and got back down to 6 again to go through the winter. This will be my last year with them. I'll let them hatch but will butcher everything in the fall. I don't care...

    Roosters need a new home...

Sounds delicious Baymule but while I give all other bones to my dogs, I don't give them chicken bones which are more apt to splinter and require an emergency trip to the vet when they puncture their insides. I do save off all the gristle and other less edible pieces though, and the dogs get...

Free Mulch & Wood Chips Program

It didn't like my address at first either. Turns out all it wants in that field is the street address. E.g. 123 Main St. Don't put any commas, city or state. Then put the zip in the next field and you're good to go.

Free Mulch & Wood Chips Program

Good info Sprinkler Buddy. Nevertheless, I did just sign up for it - I can always use it around trees as mulch, or age it in a compost pile before using it.

    Roosters need a new home...

I agree with the others. I've had one bad one and put up with him for way too long because he was in every way the perfect rooster to the hens - gentle with them, ever vigilant, refused to eat treats but called the hens to anything he found or was offered. His only flaw was that in his...
