California Drought-Better Double Your Garden Size!

™¢• I'm on a mac but the option key also says "alt". I held it down and typed 248. I got some characters I'm seeing on my screen but will post to see if they change upon posting….

Your Help Needed - Evalutating NEW Forum Software

I wonder if that's what happened to me. I started getting advertising info from funeral homes wanting my business. And at 30 I called AARP to ask to be taken off their mailing list. I also would not be a fan of birthdays being publicized - I prefer to maintain privacy. Nifty - there are a...

Wow, Smart Red - that is a boatload of seeds! I never even considered until this discussion, the need to keep a different container for veggies vs. seeds etc., since I've only ever grown veggies. This year for the first time I also plan to plant some flowers. My companion planting research...

How do you measure soil temperature?

The main problem I had with the spirit ones is that whatever it reads when I pull it out of the package….never changes. Put it in hot water, put it in cold water, "shake" it (like the mercury therms) - nothing. It reads what it reads without changing (and this is multiple of them, not just one...

How do you measure soil temperature?

Oh, I only wish we could still get the mercury ones - I'd buy a bundle of them! I've tried numerous of the newer ones and they are terribly inaccurate. I've never yet found one that had the slightest chance of giving me an accurate reading.

How do you measure soil temperature?

How do you use the info you get from bulbs coming up? I.e., does that mean you start planting immediately, a week later, a month?

Earlier in this thread there were some images of other people's record keeping ideas. I just took some pictures of my seed storage "solution" to post. Here is the box I use to store the seed packets. Excuse the dust on the lid :hide When the lid is opened, you can see the seed packets line...

More Hard Decisions (Dog Gone It!)

bobm, I don't disagree - hybrid vigor does not always apply. One of my favorite dogs of all time was a mutt with the worst case of hip dysplasia the vet had ever seen - he had to be put to sleep when he was only 5 years old, and he was only a 40lb dog too - not a mix of larger breeds. When I...

More Hard Decisions (Dog Gone It!)

Even going to a reputable breeder is no guarantee of good health. I have a dear friend whose husband is the type to research everything he does to the nth degree, and will only buy purebred puppies from the best breeder he can find - even though each one costs hundreds of dollars and is...

Its a zero turn ride-on. I don't think they make catchers for those but if they do, mine didn't come with one...

Heather - that is a great idea too. Last Fall I spent several hours sorting my seed packets. What I found is that once I opened a packet, even though I folded over the top, at some point it would get turned upside down and seeds spill out. Even though I kept all my opened seed packets in a...

More Hard Decisions (Dog Gone It!)

I second the idea of a shelter dog. 3 of my friends have working LGD's to protect their flocks of poultry. Two of them have lost birds TO the LGD's during their puppy stage and all three of them have had predator losses despite the presence of LGD's. Meanwhile, I have two adopted shelter...

    Garden walkways

The nice thing about my garden area is if the beds are too wide this year, next year I can make them narrower :) In my experience, mowing (and then edging) works okay in raised beds, but not so well with a garden that is directly in the ground. With my current garden bed, I can mow around the...

I know what you mean. Usually I buy seedlings and plant directly outdoors. I know I've started from seed before but can't remember how good my harvest from them was. This year is the first year I'm trying to plan well, stick to the plan, and maintain good records. After this I'll have a...

I jumped the gun by about a week - I just couldn't wait any longer. The PlanGarden plan provides planting dates for indoor/outdoor (as applicable) based on my zip code and it suggested 2/16 as a good planting indoor date for peppers. I dunno? I'll just trust it for now but it might turn out I...

    Garden walkways

Yeah, I hear what you both are saying and I may only do it once. I was eager to maximize the growing space in my garden but we'll see. I'm not planning much that grows boundlessly like cukes - the worst thing I'll be dealing with is tomatoes but I kept them at one end with the peppers and...

    Garden walkways

Yeah, that was how I did it when I did raised beds too. Now though, I have one big area of 16x40 so I need to manually divide it into beds and walkways each year. The whole patch is tilled by my neighbor each February so I essentially start with a blank slate each year. But because the tiller...

You aren't concerned about using weedy hay in the garden area and fighting weeds the rest of the season? We keep sheep and goats and have plenty of sheep quality hay. It is great for them but not horse-quality because it is weedy. I had suggested to DH that we can use whatever is left over at...

Ah well, I haven't actually DONE it yet, so we'll see, eh? Its easy when its just at the concept stage. Though I am using the plan to determine how many seeds to start for each variety. I figured if I only start as many as I'll actually need, it will help me stick to my plan. I know not all...
