This is the first time I've actually made up a plan so we'll see. I certainly HOPE I can stick to it but I'm sure it will require some discipline. We moved two summers ago so last year was the first with the garden here. The previous people didn't have a garden so we had to start from...
Same here! When I have 2-3 vigorous little plants growing, I don't have the heart to kill any of them. In the past, I've just planted out the whole little newspaper pot and let all of them vie for the nutrients and grow into one plant - sort of. But I decided the same as you this time - I'm...
I went to sign up this morning but was told that my email was already in the system so apparently I signed up years ago (I'll find out after I post this and will for the first time see my "join date"). I've gardened on and off all my life, sometimes successfully….other times not so much. It is...
I don't think you can plant directly in compost, but if I'm wrong, I hope others will correct me. My understanding is that it is too rich and needs to be mixed proportionately with top soil. In that sense, I'm happy the chooks are mixing mine up for me.....
I've never fertilized either but as a PP said, tomatoes are pretty resilient. Last year I bought seedlings and planted them. Three days later we had a killer hailstorm (hail stones the size of golf balls) and it wiped out all the seedlings - or so I thought. Amazingly, the stems that were...
I planted a few tomato seeds on Saturday. I was stunned to notice this morning that one of them has already started to show through the surface. I thought 7-10 days for germination but I guess this one was really ready to be planted.
I'm working this very same issue right now. Because my backyard tends to flood when it rains hard, I decided to do raised beds this year but now that I've made the frame, filling it is another matter. I want the vegie garden to be cost effective - not end up costing a fortune so that whatever...
I'd let them stay but so that they will have something to eat, every so often, add some compostable material to the pot - banana peels, apple cores, citrus peels etc. If you don't like the appearance of them laying on the surface of the pot, you can bury them just below the surface. The worms...
