My Teeny Urban Garden (updated; even more photos post 43/page 5)

Those stripy tomatoes are Tigrovy. My Green Zebras are growing pretty slowly, and I've only got a couple small ones set. And they're not as pretty as these are. :) The Tigrovies are a red-striped variety (dunno what color on the stripes yet). I'll keep photographing them as they mature. I'm...

When is it too late to plant veggies?

Try this: http://acmg.ucdavis.edu/Your_Garden,_Month-by-Month/ It says that you can plant all your summer veg in May. The test gardens provide lists (and visits/demonstrations/lectures) about what grows best when in your area (if I've got my California geography correct)...

I've never had much luck either, but this time things are going well. Even with the balky ones. The plants pictured are Red Pear, Tigrovy (first to the top of the cage), and SunGold (prolific bugger). The Green Zebra and Red Brandywine are still around 3' tall, throwing fewer blossoms and...

I need your great ideas? Please :-)

http://hollygrovemarket.com/who-we-are Our local equivalent isn't run on shares or as a co-op. Whenever we want (they're open 2 days/week, and now adding a third day), we can go and either purchase the box-o-veggies ($25), and/or buy items individually (by the bunch/pound). The veggie box...

My Teeny Urban Garden (updated; even more photos post 43/page 5)

Thanks! :D If I tossed that tomato, it would bounce off Riley's head (he's still not learned to catch), he'd chase it, chew it, decide he didn't want it, and spit it out. Ungrateful git. :) He does put on a convincing face, tho. Those manky leaves were off of a lone tomato that was located...

My Teeny Urban Garden (updated; even more photos post 43/page 5)

An update: Half of my tomatoes have topped their cages (Red Pear, Tigrovy, Sungold... that's a 4' chain link fence, for reference). The other half (Green Zebra, Red Brandywine, and a volunteer.... roma?) are approaching 3'. Everything has blossoms and at least 1 fruit set. And my melons...

Advice for adding green to a nothing but gravel landscape.

If you can't remove the gravel, I'm guessing container gardening may be your best bet. Containers needn't be pots, however. Boxes, baskets, pallets.... Tho pots may be the simplest to obtain, fill, and move. You could, feasibly, build boxes on top of the gravel for raised beds. But...

    Elephant ears

In my yard they're weeds. I've got one that I like, and others have popped up in the unlikeliest of places up to 10' away. We hacked most of them down a few weeks ago, and I tossed them into my compost, and now I have ears unfurling from my compost pile. Weeds! :)

    Garden Layout RE: Neighbors

I've had a thought........ My garden is set up thusly: I like using the fences as trellises, and while I don't much care for the view, I do like that the fence itself doesn't cast a shadow over my garden. I don't mind sharing with the neighbors, even if they don't know what to do with a...

My Teeny Urban Garden (updated; even more photos post 43/page 5)

Thank you! :) Winter never came this year. At all. We had two nights of frost. Period. I wore a coat to work maybe 5 days. I started the tomatoes and peppers (and other stuff) on Feb 4, outside in trays, no greenhouse, no protection, no lights. I transplanted everything into the...

Super flavorful salad from the garden, mmmmm

I had one of those too. :) Mine was mixed baby leaf lettuces, arugula, basil, and dill. My radishes were blown, and the tomatoes aren't ripe yet. I should have dressed it with garlic, lemon, olive oil and parmigiana, but I was lazy.

    Any secrets for aching back?

Soak in the tub with epsom salts and apple cider vinegar. Anti-inflammatory meds. Yoga. :)

My Teeny Urban Garden (updated; even more photos post 43/page 5)

I'm thinking of pulling all the marigolds out and installing some Charentais melons along the front edges of one of the tomato beds. The beds are pretty clearly defined, and the tomato/pepper beds are fairly regimented (except for the basil and borage stuck in here/there). Everything is...

My Teeny Urban Garden (updated; even more photos post 43/page 5)

Thanks guys. :) I suspect that Riley is a border collie/ lab cross, but I don't know for certain. He and his brother (I presume) Winston (who looks more labby) were found running the streets of the 9th ward as 4 month old puppies, full of worms and mange. I love border collies, and we'd been...

My Teeny Urban Garden (updated; even more photos post 43/page 5)

I figured if I was successful this year I'd keep creeping into the center area. I didn't want to maintain THAT MUCH garden this year, or turn that much soil, or figure out how to do paths.... this way the mower still fits around the garden beds. Our weedwacker is broken, and my boyfriend is...

My Teeny Urban Garden (updated; even more photos post 43/page 5)

I've finally taken some photos of the garden. I'm located in MidCity, in New Orleans. Winter never came this year, so I started all my seeds on Feb 4 (late, even if we'd had winter), and set them out around March 6. We have a weird property line, and my garden is in a piece that's actually...

White stuff on Snap peas leafs

A few years ago I had some powdery mildew on a squash plant in a pot. I sprayed it with diluted skim milk (50/50 skim milk/water), and it got rid of the mildew. Crazy. :) Google is totally backing me up on this, too. I am also experiencing an "odd whiteness"... Mine is due, I believe, to...

    Tomato Virus? and Flea Beetles?

Huh. Interesting. I'd planted a bunch of stuff as companions (marigolds, nasturtiums, radishes, sunflowers), and am beginning to wonder if I'm doing myself any good. :( I have a sneaking suspicion that the radishes actually attracted the flea beetles. The marigolds are thrip-ridden. The...

    Tomato Virus? and Flea Beetles?

Tomato Borer?!? Feh. The tomatoes are getting a bit of rain. I'm near the Gulf, so it may go 2 weeks without rain, but then we can get 2" overnight. Last rain was Saturday, and it was drizzly for probly 12 hours. I water in the evenings, every or every-other day, before the sun goes down...

    Tomato Virus? and Flea Beetles?

So, I saw these spots on one of my tomatoes, and I've never really seen this before, and I suspect it's maybe a virus of some sort? Shall I yank it out of the ground and burn it as an example to others? I think I may have another one (volunteer potato leaf mystery tomato) that may be doing the...
