This stuff is new so it isn't bad. A few years ago I was obstinately trying to push a stake into stony ground, it shattered, and I ended up on my finger tips and tippy toes with a sharp edge point barely breaking the skin over my jugular. That was the point where I stopped using old stakes. My...
I thought this would interest some people. This is Tatiana from Tatiana's Tomato Base. It's a lot harder to get her seeds these days so I think this is a great opportunity!
High Mowing primarily caters to organic farmers, and they've gotten more expensive for home gardener quantities in the last couple of years. They get much more affordable when you get into the middle and large quantities orders, and also with more common varieties, and their quality is tough to...
I've thought about getting a PO box just north of the border just to make Seeds of Diversity easier to participate in without going broke :)
Your plants look amazing!
I think that's what was eating mine, though I was never sure. Whatever it was stopped when I sprayed pureed ghost peppers on them and never came back but by then the damage was done. I harvested 10 peanuts off from what started as 8 plants two years ago, only because some of them came back from...
I've had decent luck with Valencia here. A few others are marginal but I mostly end up just replacing my seed. The hardest thing for me is that EVERYONE wants to eat the baby peanut plants.
My community garden plots are in a flood plain and the river comes to visit every few years. One year, after a fairly minor flood, when I was trying to save some peas for seed, I took a post hole digger and dug down to the sand layers. It worked so well that my neighbor's wood chips all floated...
I'd like to say that I'll do something clever like add leaves to compost or bury them under some mulch near my favorite veggies but .. realistically I'll watch them grow with some passive interest and a vague notion that I should do more. :)
Wow, this is the second day that our ground is bare. After a lot of rain it's also thawed about 6 inches down. Still hard as a rock below that though. I did see one little iris that's tucked up against the house foundation sprouting though!
Other parts of the community garden where I spend my summer evenings have that. The seed explosions are craaaazy! There's a grassy strip where people can drive between that area and mine and I hope it continues to serve as a barrier!
I know this thread is 5 years old but it is exactly what I was looking for. For those of you who are still around - are the non-seeding kinds still doing well for you without getting out of control? I got 6 'Bocking 14' root cuttings recently and so far I'm eying them skeptically and trying to...
Hmm well I want you to grow it and tell us for sure whether it takes over or not :-D
Yeah .. I have 4 gardens and there's big differences between them. Two of them are only a few hundred yards apart and can have seemingly completely different years pest-wise. I like that phrase!
We get two or...
Thanks! It's been so long since I got it originally that I'd forgotten for sure. It's a favorite of mine!
65F (18+C) here today and sunny. There's hope for spring yet!
I have never heard of these! :-o
Edit: After some googling I'm pretty sure this is the same as the 'chufa' that people plant in their chicken yard mixes here.
It's funny how different weeds are from location to location. I see nutsedge in my garden from time to time but it's never invasive here. When I had a half acre garden I'd get maybe 2-3 of them per year. Don't judge me too harshly but I always thought it was kind of cute. :p The way that...
OH! I grew a couple of those a couple of years ago when Baker Creek was giving them out. I would rate them as nice looking but average overall.
There's a lot of tomatoes from Ukraine and Russia that thrive here. I have one early cherry called Maskotka (possibly russian for Mascot?) that's...
I have not, but I do some work with gleaning organizations and am always trying to get them to 'glean' my quack grass for me. Somehow they never seem very interested. The bishops weed doesn't smell like anything I'd like to even try.
I'm jealous though I suspect you have other, similar...
I appreciate all the thought you put into this, and if nothing else I'm happy to have shown someone something new! Some thoughts are below. In general I think the biggest practical problem for me would be space to store the buckets plus finding a weeeee bit of motivation when it's the end of a...
