My first try at growing Lima beans. There are about two dozen pods on these two plants. The largest ones are about 4" long. I remain hopeful that that will fill out before the first frost, which is still two months away.
I tried direct seeding it, and also starting the seeds in soil blocks and planting out 2" tall seedlings. Even the seedlings succumbed, possibly due to unseasonably cold weather. Next year I will plant out much larger transplants, aiming for mid-June or so for putting them out in the garden...
Cocaine Shelly beans are drying down nicely too. The one off-type plant that I am monitoring has produced pods with attractive purple streaks. I couldn't resist peeking inside one of them, and sure enough there is some purple on the seed as well. 💜
Last year I grew Alpine Poblano peppers for the first time. The seed originated from a six year breeding program by Wild Mountain Seeds (zone 3, Carbondale, CO). https://wildmountainseeds.com/product/alpine-poblano/
A few fruits from those plants made it to the red stage for seed saving, and...
Year two of trying to grow sorghum with mixed results. Mennonite Sorghum in particular was a challenge to establish, but on the third round of sowing a few plants took hold. They are now about 10' tall and forming seed heads!
Lots to do in the garden, but given that rain was in the forecast harvesting seed took priority. Dry pods of Harvester Mangiatutto, Znichka (yellow bush beans), and Valentino were collected. First time growing Valentino, and I was surprised to see that their pods dry down to a beautiful shade...
It was supposed to be really hot yesterday however that didn't materialize as the smoke from wildfires prevented the sun from shining through. The Fire Smoke website suggests that we will be smoky on and off for a few days: https://firesmoke.ca/forecasts/current/
It's been humid too, which is...
Network pole snap bean Potomac is likely the most robust plant in my garden this year. Not sure if it's the variety or the location that is responsible for it growing so well-- but I'm happy with its progress so far!
What an interesting phenomena-- and how cool that your bamboo seeds are sprouting into a new generation of plants. I had bamboo flower once, but never got any new shoots from it. :)
About 20 years ago we purchased bamboo to use as a privacy screen; if memory serves me correctly it was Fish Pole (Golden Bamboo). At the time an older gentleman in the area had an extensive bamboo nursery at his home, and he spent about an hour educating me on some of the unique properties of...
Fairly certain this one is called Strawberry Ice, a large dinner plate dahlia. The creamy shell pink and yellow tones always draw me in for a closer look.
Seven months after sowing the seeds the Lisianthus are finally beginning to bloom. The rose-like blossoms are exquisite, but in my opinion these flowers take up far too much time, energy, and real estate to make growing them worthwhile.
I'm growing Artist Gherkins for the first time, and the vines are really taking off. We had to put in tall posts for them to climb up-- and then a clothesline type string tied to the top of the post so they can continue to grow laterally. This morning I harvested a bunch for fermenting. Of...
The pollen-free series such as ProCut and Sunrich are a must for bouquets, especially if you plan on sharing the bouquets with others. My mom used some sunflowers with pollen for arrangements recently, and they dropped pollen all over the place making a big mess in the house.
