    UPDATE: Argh!!! Children!!!

How old are the little b...uh, darlings? Have you ever been able to catch them out there? Have you ever spoken to them or their parents? Sometimes making them think you're good and crazy helps. Are you in a location where you can scream like a banshee without getting locked away? Scream...

Food Companies Lobby To Block Warning Labels

Belated happy B-day, Hattie. I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad idea. I see it from both sides. Yes, most of our population is ignorant about health. The guys you hang out with are not representative of the masses. Tags might help some to an extent. I also see a danger of misinformation or...

Wow! Perfect for gardeners. Hope they're not prone to the diseases of the honeybee.

Food Companies Lobby To Block Warning Labels

What would it hurt to try the labels? I, like some others, shudder at words like regulations and certifications. My main concern would be; who's to say what's unhealthy and how unhealthy? Those views change from day to day and study to study. Remember when eggs were unhealthy; now they're not...

Food Companies Lobby To Block Warning Labels

This reminds me of a year when I was assigned to teach a middle sch. health class because of budget cuts in the art dept. (which consisted of Me). When the kids were assigned to make a menu, they could not understand why they should not list ketchup as a vegetable. Ketchup, onions, french fries...

    Mason bees are reluctant tenants

OK, Hoodat and Lesa, fill in those of us suffering with insect ignorance. Are mason bees sometimes called carpenter bees? Are they the ones that are making pinkie size holes in the porch railing/fencing I spent a fortune having built on rental properties? If so, why might I want to attract them?

Ideas For Selling On Consignment - Local Farm Stand

You could look this up on gardenweb ; put in selling canned goods. I didn't want to bring it up, but since it has been now, the FDA has its myriad of rules over everything. I don't think rules are just statewide. When I grew/sold shiitake mushrooms, the organization I was in's experts said any...

What was your gardening experience, if any, as a child?

Actually, it wouldn't have. Cow manure is mostly grass and just has a slight earthy smell, only up close when it's fresh. It's nothing like the smell of the 4 commercial chicken houses that envelops my yard now. I'm building a tolerance to it, but I'll never not notice it. The only smell that...

I think this attitude is what our society is missing today.

What was your gardening experience, if any, as a child?

Now, that sounds like a heck of a lot more fun than watching "As the World Turns". That was about the only thing on back then when we did beans, and my mother was hooked on it - it was her "show". Why, I don't know, as she got so mad at one of the characters that it was hard to be around her for...

What was your gardening experience, if any, as a child?

I was raised on a dairy also. My father was "Dairyman of the Year" for Ga. a couple of times. My mother is kind of a cross between Mammy Yokum and the woman in Grant Wood's painting, "American Gothic".... talk about Puritan work ethic. As a kid I remember never mentioning being a farmgirl...

Bite Marks on my Green Bean and Pepper Plants(with pics!!)?

One hornworm (usually on tomatoes) can eat all your leaves off a plant in a hurry though, and when I saw that pic. of a whole half leaf gone, that's what I thought of too. If all the leaves on a annual get eaten, there will prob. be no recovery. But no need to get out the gas mask, if it's...

Bite Marks on my Green Bean and Pepper Plants(with pics!!)?

After pics., I agree, as animal bites would just be on edges. Look under leaves and on ground and under mulch for culprits. You may need to go out after dark with a flashlight. Lotta damage in a hurry makes me vote for caterpillar of some sort.
