New at this and late in the season, but thinking about...

I think your safest bets are yellow squash and green beans. They make in no time and can take heat. Lotta things in hot climates will grow now but be bitter/strong tasting.

How long do store-bought seeds keep?

Last yr. I ran across some old seed that were 7 and 10 yr. old. Scratched them in haphazardly between other stuff just to see what would happen. I was surprised when the parsley, cilantro, and sweet peas grew.

    The Useful Rock

Rocks are also great for holes in your driveway. Mine had gotten so bad that my friend said she could only stop by when in her truck. So, this week I got a "brilliant" idea. I found a driveable spot to get into my dried up pondbed, hauled 19 large outdoor garbage cans worth of Ga. red clay into...

What sweet corn do you use?

I use the thumbnail test, but my recently deceased father had a different test. He was a commercial dairyman for over 50 yrs. and grew his share of field corn, but the family sweet corn had to be picked just ripe. His test was to go to the garden, husk an ear, and bite into it. If he ate that...

Safe Food, From Soil to Plate

Thanks for the great job you do of keeping us informed. So, I know they're referring to large scale farming, but just wondering, what amount of waste is enough to be concerned about as far family water contamination ? Is there a certain distance from our well that we need to locate our garden...

    laundry tip

Never, no matter how frugal or unpicky about laundering, throw ratty work jeans in with a towel or old sheet you've placed under an area where you have a hen that lays thin eggs that burst. Not even with bleach and hot water. You will not notice anything at first, but as the heat of the day...

Using straw on the BOTTOM of raised beds

Whew! Never thought about getting mad cow disease from it. Will carefully dilute the rest of mine. It does help repel deer, although other critters have ripped open my bags in the barn to eat it. Thanks.

    Afternoon Sun

I love toad lilies. They bloom in mostly shade, and are perennial, coming in a multitude of varieties.

Can you plant a strawberry to grow into a plant? A ? someone asked me.

I have seen wild strawberrries growing on country roadsides around here, but rarely. They plants and berries were sparse, tiny, but very tasty when I sampled them. They seemed very like the Alpine strawberry. I don't think there were many, if any runners. I assume they came from seed, as the...

    Mulch question

Well, it can. It's sort of a toss up. No mulch =more weeding and watering. Mulch= more fire ant hiding places, in my location. We have multiple queen colonies here. I had to take up all my black plastic under the pots when I had a little bootleg plant nursery, as the ants were using the whole...

    labyrinth, anyone?

What is it with men and the lawnmowing and barbequeing thing? Do you think it's genetic? No offense, guys...I'm glad you enjoy it.

    labyrinth, anyone?

Cuz she's a hawk, Steve. "When in danger or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout!" Don't remember where that came from, but it describes my flock. Anyone know where that quote is from? The knot garden sounds like more of what I was trying to think of. Now I remember, I have a book...

Using straw on the BOTTOM of raised beds

Sounds like a good idea either way. Know what you mean about that bending, as I'm no spring chicken, either. If you gotta have it delivered anyway, maybe you could slip an extra dollar or two to the guy to put them directly where you need them.

    Choose Your Favorite Seasonal Flower

For right now, right here, gardenias. The one by my porch even drowns the night odor of the 4 neighboring commercial chickenhouses, if the wind's right.

    labyrinth, anyone?

I'm sure it would be a long ongoing project, but if you just started with the idea of a path set in a spiral with whatever you have around the edges... And some escape routes for emergencies... Seems I remember some article about meditation labyrinths that people travel to in order to use for...

    Wild Flower Bouquets

Come to think of it, if I could see only 2 vendors there when driving by, I wouldn't stop. You'll have to get more people involved somehow. Maybe invite artists and a bluegrass band, heck, even the sock monkey and funnelcake crowd would make it look bigger from the road..

    Wild Flower Bouquets

Yes, advertise and give it another try or two, then move on to better venue. If it's new, could take awhile. What kind of area is it? Maybe too busy. Or too rural. Or too economically depressed. If there's a college close enough, seek that crowd.Or near tourist attractions, parks, gift and...

anyone else noticed paper wasps are missing?

Another fellow landlord! Yes, the one I evicted left no tools but always little gin bottles all over yard. The one I' m waiting to evict, I see by his garbage & recyclables which I haul, can afford Jack Daniels and gin not by the bottle, but the CASE, since he doesn't pay rent... Sorry...
