    Calendula

Our’s typically reach 18-20 inches and will produce flowers till frost. The photo i posted is a plant roughly 12 inches now. Seed saving from these has been spotty so i just bought a half oz of seed several years ago, ending the “oh crap” we may not have many Calendula’s this year! We’ve tried...

Nice haul today! The Asparagus will he added to yesterday's and eaten at supper; the Squash and Beans will be frozen then vacuum sealed and stored. We‘re a little bit like the Squirrels at this time of year, freezing and storing the overage for Winter.😉

    Weed Recognition

‘My phone” says it’s Hedge-nettle, the largest member of the mint family. I grow comfrey (knit-bone) and have a couple dozen plants. I use it a number of different ways; fresh its good forage for my rabbits and after drying and crushing to remove bulk it’s a valuable element in my compost tea...

    Broccoli and Beyond

Broccoli became a lot easier when we tried “gypsy” (johnny’s). Of course, 50 miles down the road they’ll tell you “xyz” is their favorite.

    Fun Fact about Kale

Yes it is and i grow enough that in the fall i’ll cover it standing and pluck frozen leave’s off till the snow gets too deep. Then i whack the plant and hang it upside down right out side the back door. We eat our own Kale from June thru January. Last year we stripped off some leaves from the...

Pretty laid back day, as i procrastinated away the afternoon. I did however, take care of some of the important stuff and recorded it for reference. The Forget me nots are nice this year and the tomato’s are piling on fruit. Now all we need is some light/ temp to ripen them! Sometime next week...

Any of my fellow greyhairs cutting back on gardening as the years march along?

@SPedigrees, i don't have nearly as much under cultivation as you but the concept of cutting back is thought about, a lot! This year i’ve hit on a workable solution and we’ll see how it all works out. Previously id be all in a tither if i had to fill in or replace anything in the spring. Our...

The other day my Wife wondered if all the Solar activity were seeing this year could be responsible for the unusually high incidence of Sun scald we experienced this spring? I’ve talked to other’s who’ve had issues as well. I don't believe it takes much of an increase to have a deleterious...

This morning I was surprised to find Mushrooms growing under a squash. “My phone” tells me it’s Argaricus which contains over 400 varieties of poisonous and non poisonous varieties! These will find their way to the compost bin. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agaricus It seems like Lettuce and...

    First time microgreens setup

Like @flowerbug, i see no sprouts but i do see a lot of seeds in 3 trays. A little googling will produce numerous helps for setting up a viable operation. If that were my operation i’d mow to reclaim that wilderness and plumb the shed for water, even just a garden hose as your’ gonna do a bunch...

@Dahlia, Moose does not have much of a “wild flavor” some folks refer to. It’s a little leaner than beef, which it can easily pass for. Of all the wild things i have Red and Grey squirrels at the top of the list, followed by Antelope, Elk and Caribou - in that order. Kind of a mixed bag today...

With a wee bit of time this morning i turned the compost. Thermo showed it to be “in the range” so i flipped it. I was surprised to see this much steam coming off the pile but ambient was 50’ish here today. Took less than 25 min of fork time. Then up in the garden i noticed this one Asparagus...

@catjac1975, you cant imagine! The Moose come thru at all times and if things aren't protected they’re gone. Last Wednesday my wife stepped out to sho’ one off some flowers and it charged her causing her to fall hard and stub all her toes on one foot. The Good Lord kept it at that and she’s...
