I wondered about that, Pat. It seemed to me that since you are de-botulizing the jars after you fill them up that they need only be *clean* when you put the food in there. You don't want dirt and old food particles, obviously, but any disease causing, ambient germs ought to be killed in the...
I would second buying one. It takes such an awful long time for the little ones to start making fruit. I bought a 3 year old kieffer pear for $28 last year and it has a whole bunch of pears on it this year.

Ok, I've found several pressure canner recipes for tomato pasta sauce. I guess that's marinara sauce, right? But they all seem pretty bland. (tomatoes, a couple herbs, some onions) I like my spaghetti sauce to have lots of stuff in it!
Tomatoes
Bell peppers
Onions
Garlic
mushrooms
herbs (basil...
I figured it out! I figured it out! :dance
My canner (the one that says it is perfect for smooth top ranges is designed to fit your small burner.
There is a deeper well in the center of the canner that is about half an inch deep. It is 8 inches in diameter.
Only that 8 inch well sits on...
It's sort of a pain. They fall through the cracks. You have to be very careful about laying them on there. I did a batch, though and they are definitely dried. Now I will have to try rehydrating some to see if they are still edible.
Cassandra
Yeah, I picked it up in that post, too. I'm letting my OWN beans dry on the vine. :)
I threw as many as I could fit on the dehydrator to see what would happen.

It does the same thing for me. After I put the jars in, takes a long time to get the water to a rapid boil again. I attribute this to a couple of things (but, of course, I can't be sure of the cause)
1.) I usually have the canner sitting on a smaller diameter burner because of the unfortunate...
Rosalind, how long does it take?
the ones I picked yesterday were from someone else's garden, so leaving them on the vine wasn't exactly an option.
thanks

They look very similar to that! I can't swear that I have ever gotten quite that good a look, though! LOL
They are smaller than regular wasps and black & yellow striped. My little boy got stung on the back of the thigh by a couple of them last summer (I think it was)
I had to carry him inside...
I wanted to share this because I was shocked and amazed. I guess maybe some of you may think this is obvious, but yesterday was the first time I'd ever seen it and I was wowed.
There was a paper nest of guinea wasps (they are extremely mean little things!) right by my office door. The young...
Is anyone coming along in the course? It seems really cool (helpful!) information it teaches.
Their software seems kinda wacky. I have had to ask them to reset my password twice because I was having log in problems. But the instructor and tech support were sweet as they could be about it. Very...
Mine are planted in a "flower bed" too. There is this bush in their bed that I am trying to get rid of because I hate it and it makes a shade and everything. I think that's the main reason my herbs aren't thriving as much as they normally would. But they are doing OK. I get sage and thyme...
Hey, look. Here is one with an inside diameter of 10 1/4 inches (the outside diameter will be a little bigger.)

Now that I got my new pressure canner (woohoo) I am about to sell my old boiling water bath canner. I just can't afford the space for these two big bulky items that do the same thing. Anyway..
with all this talk about steam canners, it got me wondering.
In a boiling water bath, you cover the...
