The Evergreen Tomato Plants (LOL) PICS

I thought to post some pictures of my non-riping tomatoes. :) From looking through the posts here, I think it has been close to a month since I had some good sized tomatoes on the plants. But my sister just called me last night to ask why her tomatoes weren't getting ripe! And my mom's aren't...

What is this pretty purple flowered bush type thing

Oooo. So THAT is Deadly Nightshade. I have read about it and wondered. It sounded so mysterious and dangerous. :) Pretty photos! Cassandra

    Tomato harvest

I think mostly high 60's to mid 70's. Wouldn't shock me at all if they were getting hotted to death! :) I have been watering them a bit more than usual because I feel sorry for them. lol Cassandra

    Tomato harvest

It is one of the cruelties of nature that I can't have home-grown tomatos year round. And mine are still refusing to ripe. I must have gotten some of those "determinate" types. I tried to get mostly indeterminate, though. But now I've lost my little plant stickers, and I can't remember which...

    How to preserve Basil

I've read that for most like fresh, you should preserve it in salt--in single layers that don't overlap. I'm going to try some of that. (I have one of those that's about to flower. :P ) I would guess that the best way would be in one of those wide, rectangular plastic containers. Layer of salt...

    Adventures in Canning (blackberry jelly)

Note to self: BUY A BIGGER POT :/ See where this is going? I canned a few batches of jelly for the first time last summer. I always found it to be kind of a pain in the neck, but also somewhat addicting. I mean, it's so tedious... but SO AWESOME. Brennan (my 4 yr old son) & I started...

Hey, what is that kind of grass...

That when you cut it, and it rains the next day, a day or two later, it has these foot tall stems sticking up that have a Y of seeds and black fuzzy seedlets on them? I'm just curious. Cause that is mostly what my yard is made of apparently. Cassandra

Help identifying SC natives? *pic heavy! (7) 320x240s*

Hey, I have bunches of those same ones! Especiall 2, 4 and 5. Those "horsetails" (or whatever they are) are ESPECIALLY annoying. I have been digging them up as I find them and their roots are like iron and come in HUGE knots. And, all I can say is... I hope it's OK for chickens to eat...

    Something poopy ate my basil.

That's what I was going to say! It looks like the stinging kind! :o They can hurt. I haven't seen one in years, but they were around a lot when I was little and I knew to stay well away from them. Cassandra

    Pectin or no pectin?

Well, thanks you all. I think I will just use pectin anyway. (I've got some. Why take the chance, huh?) The recipes that did not call for pectin called for about 1/4 of the berries to be unripe. Now I know why. :) Hey, look at my avatar. Those berries in the picture are the ones I made juice...

    Pectin or no pectin?

Yeah, I thought so. I think some fruits (like apples I have heard) have more pectin in them than others, so some fruits don't need pectin to make jelly. But I would be scared to try to make jelly without it...

any sweet potato experts out there?

And since we are trying to attract sweet potato experts, can I pipe in a question, too? Seems like I read somewhere that they are perennials. Is that true?

    Pectin or no pectin?

I just collected enough wild blackberries for jelly today. I made the juice tonight so I can make the jelly this weekend. I have found a couple of recipes and some of them say use pectin, some don't. How does that work? Cassandra

Home grown tomatoes ... at last!!

I'M SO JEALOUS!!!!!!!!!!!! My plants are sagging with GREEN tomatoes! Some of them as big as my fist. But they will not turn red! They are not even ready to pick green and sit on a sunny window sill. I go outside every day after work, sit on a five gallon bucket and STARE at them for at least...

    Harvesting Dill

That's just perfect everyone. Exactly what I needed to know. So between now and the time I get home, I have to decide exactly how much I like dill. LOL Good grief, Pat! You like tarragon, but not dill?! Are you a robot? heheh You know, I was just thinking, there's probably no reason I can't...

What kind of berry bush is this?

Looks like huckleberries to me! I'd eat a couple, but then, I am a daredevil. ^_^ Cassandra

    Harvesting Dill

I have a little bush of dill that I planted from a store-bought pot several weeks ago (maybe two months at most.) It is beginning to flower already! I just read that once they start to flower, the flavor goes south. What should I do? Just pick it all now and dry it or something? (I love dried...

    Harvesting banana peppers

I planted ONE banana pepper plant. It is currently producing a few peppers, but I'm not quite sure when to pick them. John (dh) looked online and said you have to wait until they turn completely yellow. Mine don't seem to be turning yellow at all, but they are getting big. The plant is only 16...
