I have found that peanut shells take a really long time to break down. Whenever we screen our compost out, there's always peanut shells left behind. But, we still compost them anyway, because I'm sure they eventually break down. And our chickens love to eat them when they scratch around in it.
Nice planting choice Steve. ;) Do you plant them just for looks, or do you use them for anything? They are pretty to look at, but I also use them to make balms.
I think you had the right idea adding more newspaper. It does sound like you need more "browns" in your compost, like straw or dried shredded leaves. We turn our pile frequently, and if it seems that it's getting too wet, we add some sticks to improve air circulation. I don't think the...
Thank you for the replies all. :) I'm pretty sure it is from a clove I missed last year. It's in a spot where I can leave it, so I'm going to let it go and see what happens.
I cleaned out one of my smaller gardens the other day, and noticed that I had left behind some garlic last fall, and it is starting to grow new tops. Is the garlic okay to harvest? What happens if you let it continue growing?
Yes, black radish. This is our first time growing it, and we chose it because it is a cold and cough remedy. I don't much care for radishes myself, but we're all into that natural healing stuff.
It is pronounced kuh-len-juh-luh. :D Although, I was saying it kal-en-doo-lah for the longest...
We use a paper grocery bag for tissues, napkins, and other paper products, and then we bury them in the compost pile. It actually doesn't take very long for it to break down, especially if the pile is really "hot."
We have one of those too! It is so much nicer than plastic containers. Those always end up cracking and breaking on us, they just don't last as long as ceramic. And the ceramic containers look nicer and keep the rotting food smell to a minimum. I really like that carbon filter.
Yes, I know what you mean. We make sure to keep our perennial herbs out of their fenced in area. :)
The netting is a good idea, and I remember seeing it at the hardware store the other day.
The eyehooks are working out very well Steve. You can configure the panels into any shape and...
Thanks guys! My husband made the panels. They have eye hooks down both sides to run rods through and keep them together. They are working out very nicely.
The only issue we have had is with our naughtiest chicken. Her name is Girlfriend (she's got attitude :D ). She likes to jump out of...
