An old-fashioned trick was to stick peanut butter or cornbread in and among the roots. Then let the pigs in.
Their incessant rooting for the treats would soon have the trees devoid of soil and mostly dug out. Then you finished the job with pick axe and fire.
A back hoe does a pretty good job...
I guess my problem, if it is one, is this: Fear. Everything frightens and worries us now - even our food. One of the few things in life that we can take individual pleasrue in, and we gotta muck it up with worry and doubt. So much so, it seems, that we cant accept what good we DO encounter...
Again you gotta wonder who profits from applying the labels. The thing about a scalpel is it will cut both ways. As we rush to surgically eliminate the "bad things" from our lives - we rarely stop to ask the motives.
Good health? Certainly health food companies have a stake in seeing food...
Ive not used "fresh" seed in ages. I buy on close outs at the end of the season, mostly, so Im almost always planting last years seeds (or older).
SO far, about 3 years is the practical limit for most store bought seeds, if they are kept free of damp and excess temps during storage.
Remember...
I found a wooded patch where someone has been dumping grass and leaf trimmings for years. Huge piles of the stuff just lie there, rotting... free for the taking on public access land.
I drive my truck over fill er up and head out. My compost bin WILL BE enlarged...
This whole thing is silly, much ado about noting. Do you think a warning label will stop people from eating their favored junk food?
Oh, in time, it might serve as a subliminal deterrent, once everyone is numbed down enough to accept the message of guilt it thrusts upon us...
"You naughty...
Were having heat advisories now, too.
I've gradually learned not to be in a rush to get tomatoes going. Oh, I may get some cherry types going in containers earlier, just to have some. But I generally wait until the very end the "proper time" to put them in. Ive just planted them, for example...
Have any adult male urinate around the perimeter, if a fox cant be coerced into doing so. And if these passive methods fail try "The .30 WCF Solution."
Youre not an idiot - you are only doing what you must. There is no rule that says gardens must be started on this date or that date. That stuff is for the back of seed packets. Some few things require rather long growing periods, like winter squashes. But, most vegetables come in well within 90...
That sounds awesome. Ive always wanted to try potatoes in tires - no hilling.
In fact Ive never even tasted a homegrown potato. My friend is growing them this year, so maybe I can get a few...
Im attempting "Giant Oxhearts," for no more reason than I have a mess of seed. One of the members here sent them to me, so I'll give em a go.
She liked em, so why not?
Heirloom? I guess...
- Plant tomatoes in groups, not in rows.
- Stake them up, dont allow them to sprawl on the ground. -
- Dont allow them to grow longer than 6 feet.
- Keep suckers pinched out.
Keep them close to one another and vertical, and they will pollinate better. If in doubt, use a small makeup brush...
