    Saving Butternut Squash

Wow! I guess it doesn't get any easier than that! :D About how long do they last? Is there any way to tell from the outside if they're going bad, or will I have to cut them open?

    Saving Butternut Squash

A friend gave me a box full of butternut squash. Is it possible to freeze, can, preserve or otherwise save for future use? If so, how do you do it? Thanks!

    Collecting Seeds

How do you collect, handle, store and prepare seeds to plant the following season? Are different types of seeds handled in different ways? Do they have to be dried or kept in certain conditions? Or do you just collect the seeds and plant them the next year?

    Freezing Peas

Doodle and Pat - Thanks for the replies! I planted garden peas (the kind that are shelled). This was my first experience growing peas. I was surprized by "how many they looked like on the plants" became "how few they looked like" in a freezer bag! :/

    Freezing Peas

I was showing off my harvest of peas to a friend. I had frozen them in their pods and he told me I should have taken them out before I froze them. Is he right? Then he told me the only reason I didn't take them out first is because it looks like more if I didn't!!! (He was right about that! :P)...

    How big will it get?

I think you're right, Silkie. For some reason my head was still in August! I was thinking from Aug. to Nov. was 3 full months. So if they need 3 months to fruit and another to mature I guess they should have been planted in June or July. That's what I'll do next year. Thanks!

Difference in Pumpkins Cooking vs Jack O lantern

I've alway loved cooking with fresh pumpkin! I've found that the smaller varieties are the sweetest and most flavorful for cooking.

    How big will it get?

Thanks, all! I guess I'll have to expect to use a larger area than I thought. When I prepared a spot for my garden I thought it was a good size. My plan was to plant "just a few" veggies. Now after I see all the goodies I can grow myself my garden seems somewhat puny! I'll be...

    How big will it get?

I'm planting some Butternut Squash and need to know if they grow as big as my Zucchini plants did. The zukes were huge! Some leaves were larger than a foot across and they shaded and killed the row of eggplant next to them. I had NO IDEA how big the plants got! Will the Butternuts be as big (or...

    Pea Plants turning yellow

Thanks for the tip, bills! I plan on planting more peas in the fall, so I'll save the dried ones and use those! :)

    Pea Plants turning yellow

I have pea plants that are about 2' tall. I've been able to harvest some peas, but the plants are all starting to turn yellow and the pods on those plants are drying out. The weather has been very hot and humid (heat index over 100), but I've watered them well. The soil is sandy and drains very...

    Harvesting Zukes

Here's another silly question from a complete veggie garden beginner. How do you harvest zucchini? Do you cut it off the vine or pull it or twist it??? The stem seems a little thick to just pluck it off. If you cut it, where do you make the cut? Do you cut at the base of the stem or do you cut...

    Weeds for Compost

Thanks for all the great info! Here's another question. How do you measure the temperature of the compost? Do you actually put a thermometer in or under the compost? Will the air temp have any influence on how quickly the matter composts (will the compost stay hot during the winter months)? 120...

    Normal Sprout Rate

Thanks to everyone for the info! The seeds are all new. I ordered from Baker Creek only a few months ago. The peppers and eggplants are still not transplanted outside yet. I only planted them about 6 weeks ago and they're still small so I want to wait another couple of weeks to plant them...

    Normal Sprout Rate

I'm not sure if my seed/sprout ratio is normal or if I'm doing something wrong. This is what I planted and what is growing: Transplants: Peppers - 12 seeds planted, 11 growing Eggplant - 12 seeds planted, 4 growing Directly sowed: Peas - 40 seeds planted, 28 growing Lettuce - 8 seeds planted...

    Weeds for Compost

I've seen a few people mention that they throw weeds into their compost. What is the best way to do this without having the weeds root and grow? Or is that not a problem? Do you compost the roots or just the plant? Thanks!
