    New to gardening.....

I am absolutely new to gardening, but most of the good advice I've received has been from this forum. Some of the best advice was to see what your neighbors are having success with. Those will be the things that grow best in your area. Another bit of advice that I found useful is to start a...

    Zucchini trellis?

I just finished planting 8 of them. Since it's only my DH and me, I'm sure that's what I'll be doing, too! ;) The cardboard and newpapers ideas are great! The soil here is so sandy, drainage isn't a problem, so I'm hoping 12" apart is okay. I didn't think the leaves were that big! Anyway...

    Zucchini trellis?

Will I need a trellis for my zucchini plants? I remember reading somewhere that if they don't have a trellis the zucchini will rot on the ground. Is that true? Does anyone have a picture of a zucchini trellis they could post? If I use a trellis, will I be able to plant them closer than 12"...

    Trellis question

Do I need to space them vertically in squares as well as horizontally? I've never actually seen one and the pics on the internet sites I've googled all look like the fancier decorative trellises. Thanks!

    Trellis question

I am putting a trellis up between a double row of peas by stringing twine between two posts. How high should the twine be from the ground? How far should the higher rows be spaced apart? Thanks!

    Any uses for sheep fleece?

I had my sheep sheared yesterday and was wondering if the garbage fleece (leg and belly fleece) could have some use in my garden? Could it be used as mulch or added to my compost?

    Problem with starting seeds

Good news! I've had 6 more pepper plants sprout! The one pepper plant I thought I had turned out to be a weed! I noticed it looked different when the others started to grow. I had been watering and admiring a weed for an entire week! :he I hope that isn't an omen for a first-time garden...

    Problem with starting seeds

Thanks for a bit of hope! The two that sprouted were on opposite sides of the tray, and they are in my kitchen, so I don't think it got too cold. I've been very good about watering them as well. The seeds were just ordered from Baker's so I'm sure they're good. What is a seed heating mat? Do...

    Problem with starting seeds

I started some seeds two weeks ago and they're sitting in my kitchen near a window that gets lots of sun. I planted 12 pepper plants and 12 eggplants. I only have one of each that have sprouted. I'm thinking I may have packed the soil too much when I planted the seeds. I may have also...

    Some Very Basic Questions

Thanks for the info! I have another question. What is "bolting", how does it happen and what can I do to avoid it? Is it plant-specific? Thanks!!! :)

    Some Very Basic Questions

I've been lurking, reading and surfing the net for whatever I can learn about planting my veggie garden and have some questions. 1) What exactly is "hardening off"? When is it done and how do you do it? 2) When planting guides use numbers like this, "36 X 12" am I correct in assuming that it...

    Paper rolls for starting plants???

I saw a piece in ME News about using cardboard toilet paper rolls to start seeds indoors. It said to cut the rolls into 3" pieces, fill with dirt and plant the seeds. The point is that the plants could be put into the ground without disturbing the roots, roll and all. The roll would decompose in...

    Maine here...

Hi Angie!!! I just got back from Jackman, Maine yesterday. I was there for a sled dog race and judging from this past weekend I can't imagine anything growing any time soon with the sudden changes in weather! On Friday (first day of the race) it was so warm we were watching the snow melt. The...

    Cover crop???

Thanks! That does clear up some questions. You both mentioned tilling the cover crop under before spring planting. How do you do that without having the crop take root and start growing again? Or is that not a problem?

    Cover crop???

Can someone explain what a cover crop is? I'm trying to read everything I can about starting a veggie garden and this term keeps cropping () up! I'm assuming it's a crop that planted in the fall that is harvested or discarded in the spring. If alfalfa or oats are planted can they be...

    Store bought or catalog seeds?

What is the difference between the seeds sold in stores (like Agway or Home Depot) and the ones that are ordered through catalogs. I noticed everyone here uses catalogs. Is there a reason? Are the catalog seeds of a higher quality, or fresher? Or is there just more of a variety?
