    Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year! We are having the standard southern fare also - blackeyed peas (already cooking), cabbage and venison sausage (already cooked), green beans, fried venison, cornbread and cherry cheesecake - yum yum - sounds like a Hee Haw skit :lau We will stay home and let the kids come to us...

    Got thisel ?? (4 pics)

Bayouchica - we have that thistle here in southeast Texas, too. I put on gloves and pull it up every chance I get in the yard area. I leave it alone in the woods - our property backs up to a 100 acre 'no hunting' zone and then into a 10,000 acre hunting club so there is plenty of room for them...

    Oregon, Willamette Valley, Cascade Foothills

I visited the Willamette Valley area back in 2000! Taught a pharmacy computer class at the hosptial there. It was an absolutely beautiful place! Looks like a very nice place to live if you can handle the cold! (love the warm climate here - downright hot, actually!!) Took a road trip before...

We like Early Girl and Celebrity - both grow very well and make plenty of fruit for all of our favorites: fried green tomatoes, green tomato relish and fresh ripened reds :coolsun

Onion sets - When and How???

Thanks for all of the good information about growing onions. I've had gardens for years but have never tackled these - although this year I am! I did get the Vidalia and red onion sets from the feed store - here are a couple of pictures: digitS - you said: "Sets were plants grown from...

Onion sets - When and How???

There were Vidiala (sp??) and red onion sets at the feed store this week and they haven't been there before so maybe this is a good time to plant them in Texas? I'm going to try, using your mulch method, because January and February are our coldest months, typically. Thanks for the info...

    Texas

We're in the southeast corner - or as the bulletin board states: "the right side" of Texas :happy_flower Just 30 minutes north of the Gulf of Mexico, 15 minutes west of the Louisiana state line and skirting the northern edge of the "Golden Triangle" - in the heart of the big thicket :coolsun

Do you cook some of your garden produce for the hens?

I cooked mustard/turnip greens the other night with supper and fed the leftovers to them today- they loved it! They also loved the parts (stems, brown leaves) that I discarded when I was cleaning them before cooking. As a rule, we garden in pots - but we plan to plant some things in the ground...

    Starting a Garden

I took that picture earlier this month - the camera marked it on Nov 8 - Since taking it they have become full of large green tomatoes :D If they don't get red before if finally freezes here then we'll have lots of fried green tomatoes :yiipchick I don't care either way - I love 'em both!

    Starting a Garden

I love vegetable gardening - however I DESPISE weeding a garden plot! Not to mention - it's hard on the ol' body  Nowdays, I plant in large pots. I LOVE gardening in this way because there is NO WEEDING!!! Best of both worlds - fresh vegetables and no weeds! Below is a picture of...

    Newbie Rose Garder

Fortunately my roses don't require much attention from me - I wouldn't know how to 'properly' treat them. There are a few things that I do regularly and they seem to appreciate it because they are still blooming beautifully and it's almost December! 1 - prune them in January or February -...

Gonna start one here, so this forum don't look empty

Well, I have pictures of ours :clap This first one was marked 'pink beauty' and my son gave it to me on Mother's Day about 5 years ago - as you can see, it's not pink! I love it anyway - I think it is of the "Lincoln" type that Silkie was refering too - mine does the exact same thing - makes...

    Horseproof Vine

Bougainvillaea - I have two in pots hanging from either end of my swing frame in the backyard. The thorns are certainly a deterrent for animals and birds, alike. First picture is from September - when all was still green - I was trying to capture a few hummingbirds.... I took this picture...

    Assorted Marigolds

We plant them near tomatoes and peppers, too, when we plant in the ground. They really do help to control the root worms and look pretty sprinkled out in the garden. For the last 2 yrs, though, we have planted in very large pots - fresh soil - no weeding - great harvest. Our spring planting...

Winter Gardening? I'll be honest... never done it before.

You know I found tomato plants at the feed store in september so I picked some up. Bsue planted them in big pots and they are making beautiful fruit. If it does not freeze before they turn we will have beautiful red tomatoes, if not delicious fried green tomatoes! We love turnips and greens in...
