    Hens are on strike

It's hot today with a hurricane headed this way. The hurricane shouldn't hit us straight on but I am taking precautions anyways. Chicken water-ers will be topped off this evening as well as rabbit water-ers. I have 3 5-gallon buckets I'm going to fill just in case as well. The tarps on top...

    Hens are on strike

They are around 12 months of age. They are in a dry lot (no grass). They get layer pellets and treats/leftovers. I actually think they are a little on the thin side. Temps have been in the 80s-90s range with maybe a week of upper 90s-low 100s. They definitely are a lazy bunch. They...

    Hens are on strike

I was planning to do a half-of-the-flock (10 hens, 1 rooster) cull in August (Break in between semesters of school). I have 12 7 week old chicks in a separate coop/run. They will be my replacements.

    Hens are on strike

Thanks Ridgerunner. This has been going on for a couple of weeks now. I do know that I have several egg eaters but I was assuming they were eating one or two eggs a day not 10. My coop/run is dog/coon/coyote proof (and if they did manage to get in it would be noticeable with busted fencing)...

    Hens are on strike

I have 20 hens and 2 roosters. I am getting maybe 8 eggs a day. Usually less. They are about a year old. Is it time for them to molt? They have a full feeder 24/7, 2 full waterers 24/7 and recently I have let them have access out of their normal fenced run into another smaller attached...

    New chicks and baby bunnies!

Chicks are growing up from the second batch. They are about 6 weeks old. Bunnies are growing up too. I have 20 5 week old kits from 3 litters and a new litter of 11 that was born on 6/19. 15 of the 5 week olds will be processed next weekend so the meat will go with a puppy who is leaving for...

    New chicks and baby bunnies!

LOL baymule! Wish I had my chickens when another one of my dogs was a puppy. She's a documented guinea killer (pulled one right off the top of a 6' fence). A mean ol' rooster would have stopped that bad habit before it started.

    New chicks and baby bunnies!

Luckily my chickens are not free ranged. Due to the amount of loose dogs + other predators they are contained in a coop and large run. He only gets mean when I am shooing a hen off a nest to collect eggs and the hen fusses. I've gotten quick at closing the door in his face really quick...

    New chicks and baby bunnies!

I have 12, 1-3 day old chicks!!! My hens and roos are doing a great job producing some adorable chicks. My one australorp roo is a mean SOB. I'm debating on getting rid of him. He has attempted to attack me several times and has tried attacking one of my puppies through the wire and pecked...

    New chicks and baby bunnies!

If I can't sell the chicks then yes, they will be going to freezer camp. The current laying hens I have now are for eggs. Anything else is extra cash or dinner. I am raising rabbits specifically for meat. I do have someone that is buying the babies that die shortly after birth due to...

New Chick on the farm (pict heavy)

Oh and I had to take the eggs away from the broody hen. She originally at 15. When I candled she had 12 and the other day when I was checking for chicks she had 9. She was either eating the chicks as they hatched or was eating the eggs/chicks before they hatched. All eggs are in incubator now.

They are so cute Canesisters! I had a chick hatch 3 nights ago. Just one out of 16 100% viable eggs. They weren't due to hatch till next week. I stole the eggs from my broody hen. She was eating the eggs or eating the chicks as they hatched or something so all eggs are in the incubator...
