    Grafted fruit trees?

I am considering grafted fruit trees. My wife saw some in a catalog and liked them. Has anyone had any experience with them? Are they pretty hardy? Do they start fruiting reasonably quick. Is the fruit good quality?

    Self-sufficiency . . . have you thought about it?

I think the metal roofing would be better but not absolutely necessary. It should definitely give you the side benefit of lasting longer. It is a costly initial investment though. As far as keeping mosquitoes out of the cistern I am sure they make screens for that. In the past I have used copper...

    Self-sufficiency . . . have you thought about it?

For those saying rainwater will not meet your needs it can come closer than you think. If rain catchment is combined with a greywater system and good conservation it will go alot further. My family of three used 2k gallons last month through very strict conservation. We have about 2 dozen...

    shotgun dirt

Every suggestion so far is great. If you drink coffee do not throw those used grounds away. Coffee grounds are a great soil amendment. Consider raising some kind of animal other than dogs or cats. Rabbits and chickens are real good to keep around for soil repair. Rabbits or chickens can be put...

    horse manure

I plan to get some to help build topsoil after some excavator damage in my yard. I have rocks and dirt from 20 feet under in the place of my topsoil. Darned city and their sewer project. I don't mind the weeds so much because I think my chickens ducks or goats should like whatever weeds a horse...

I use it like lime. Lowering acidity of soil. If you use too much it will become a clay consistency once wet.

How long have you been gardening

I was involved in veggy gardening regularly from the time I could walk until a few years into my adulthood. Things started changing after I turned 22. Some years with living arrangements or whatever I could not have a garden. I have grew veggies in containers on apartment balconies because it is...

    Helping a grapevine to thrive

If you drink coffee save your used coffee grounds to use as a soil amendment around the grapevine. Not touching. It may help. I talked to my grandparents about all the plant nutrients they were wasting by throwing their veggie scraps and such in the garbage instead of the garden. They took it to...

How do you compost your chicken poo?

I never bother composting anymore since the chickens and goats eat my veggie scraps. I just pick out a spot where I know i will garden later. I then spread the litter out and till it in. When I till for the garden later the tilling is much easier.
