We pulled a ton of those lettuces and sold them at the market yesterday morning. What's still in the garden will hopefully make it another week, maybe two. But then the heat will become too much for it.
Spray plants & the affected area with artificial grape flavor - like koolaid or cheap soda. Birds react to it like mammals do to hot pepper. It will only last a couple days as it'll break down in sun or rain. But it won't take many bites before they decide go.

2 lb. hot peppers (banana, Hungarian wax, jalapeno, etc)
2 Tbsp. canning/pickling salt
1 c. white vinegar
1 c. water

Agree. We usually end up giving our peppers a stake (shorter than the tomato stakes) and tying them off once or twice....just enough to keep them from layng over from the weight of the peppers.

Steve - there are 2 more market gardens. The second is about 3/4 the size. The third is much smaller with 4 raised beds about (3' x 10' each) and a 10' x 15' plot for early cucumbers or other viney things in some years.
