The Any Wonderful Food You Made From Your Garden Today Thread!

Last night we ate fresh cauliflower, broccoli and yellow squash from the garden. And Applesauce from our trees we had canned in Fall. Today I'm picking the very first of the wax beans. I can't wait to eat them this evening.

    Bread Makers

I think they offer a one day guest pass for Sam's Clubs. We buy a lot of business supplies there, so we always maintain a membership. If you use their store locator from this page, you could get a phone #, call and ask them about a guest pass. (I din't look very long, but couldn't find info...

    Bread Makers

I have a bunch of favorite bread recipes posted here. Some of them have bread machine instructions, but can be mixed and kneaded by hand (or use dough cycle on machine), then rise, bake in conventional oven at 350* for about 25 min...

    Bread Makers

You can freeze the yeast by itself. I buy yeast in 1 lb vac sealed packages at Sam's Club. It's $5 or so for TWO 1 lb'ers. So, quite cheap comapred to buying little packets. The vac sealed packages are like bricks...LOL. Once I open a package, I keep a jar in the refrigerator for regular use...

    First year for heirloom Tomatoes

I'm another heirloom and hybrid grower. I can a lot of tomatoes too, plus salsas, soup bases, etc. I like a mix of plants for the same reasons already given - volume from hybrids and flavor from heirlooms. And I always like to have heirlooms for seed saving. I think it's fun to save seeds each...

    Planning for next year

I use this method - Leave beans on the vine when until they've turned dry and brown and the seeds inside have hardened, but before the pods split open. - Shell beans by breaking open the dry pods and removing the seeds. Put the shelled beans in the freezer for 3 to 4 hours to kill any bugs or...

    Harvested my corn

OooOOOo, Yum! Really nice photo too. We put a drop of mineral oil on each ear. That will usually smother any corn earworms before they have time to make any damage. Apply after tassles come out and pollination has occured. Also planting early helps. That allows your plants to mature before...

    10 Pints Peppers

I use Calcium Chloride (CaCl2) to keep pickled things crisp in the jar. It's a salt, a compound of calcium and chlorine. It's widely used in the pickle industry and other food applications. I buy it here, in a 16 oz bottle. Plenty to do a year's worth of pickling and get you started next year...

    June in my garden

Lovely garden! I'm curious about the 'Do you do anything special to yours?' question too. I make jam from ours, but would love some other ideas. Thanks for sharing your pics.

    Happily munching on my eggplants

They do look like some kind of mutant potato bug. Nasty little creatures (do we have a gag smilie? .... :sick ...oh, that'll do.) I does seem like everything loves eggplant, even more than it's named host. There must be something especially delicious about eggplant leaves if you're a bug. I...

    How to dry Basil ???

I agree, you'll retain more basil flavor using the oil/freezing method. However, I cannot function without some dried herbs in the house. They are perfect for long Winter storage, making dry mixes, amd I also sell them at farmers markets. I dry them by bunching with thread and hanging...

    Want to start tomatoes

My home/family is in PA. But I've been in NC for all my adult life...since college, now 51 yr old. I have to say I love the long garden season here. Sometimes I would like to be living in PA, closer to family....but then I think about that skimpy 90 day growing season and.....:barnie For 2nd...

    volunteer pepper plants

I enjoy volunteers too! We only have 1 volunteer pepper this year. We have 7 or 8 volunteer tomatoes though. We transplanted them into a separate area of the garden. None are big enough to tell what they are yet. It's quite possible some will be larger heirloom varietes....that, or we'll have...

peaches - not pruning but ? picture added

We calling it thinning too....and friends of ours who own a very large orchard also call it thinning. We thin them to 4-6" between fruits, removing the less desirable ones as Journey mentions. At the same time, we also remove any small new branches that are sprouting upward from the top of the...
