Lorelai, That is a tough one..Hyperion (1925) is one of the most popular heirlooms because of all the qualities i mentioned. But i also like August Pioneer which is a very prolific old fashioned daylily..It is also a diploid with lovely, mellow apricot colored, fragrant, trumpet shaped, 4 inch...
YAY!!!...Have you grown cukes along and up a trellis before? I wonder how tall the Marketmore vines will get..I grew Armenian Cukes up a trellis (well actually two trellises) once, and that baby grew way over the top of my GH..And the cukes (really a melon) were up to two feet long, if I let...

I will add to what joz say's. Tomatoes are self pollinating, but odds of cross-pollinating ( wind, insects, bees)..are around 10%, or so. That can be considered high when you want to save seed from heirooms to keep the lines pure.. with heirloom varieties like Brandywine and Cherokee Purple...
Marshall, I also worked at a greenhouse/nursery in our small town , for a few years, a number of years back. I aquired a lot of plants I couldnt resist..You added some others to your list that are good indestructable/easy care plants.
And yes, Smart Red is correct. Goatsbeard is the other...
For me easy care or indestructable plants are characterized by: Longevity, resistance to disease and insects, dont need to be divided by more than 4 or 5 years, has a tolerance of growing conditions, such as summer heat and cold winters, dont need staking and wont take over the garden. Long...
I dont grow many really early varieites, but I have grown a Russian variety called Azoychka..It is a heirlloom with fruits that are yellow/orange in color, and the fruit has a wonderful, sweet, citrusy taste .Meaty.. Good acid balance of flavor. Around 3 inches, 8 to 16 oz for me. It was...

I only soak seeds for hard shell varieties of vegetables, flowers etc..
For older seeds, like older tomatoes, I soak in a green tea/chamomile solution for 24 hours. It helps to wake the older seeds up.
Same for me.. I had realy good production and it makes a really nice canning tomato. I only grew it a few years, last in 2010.
I see Earl Of Edgecomb is on your list. That is another one that I have grown, and that is pretty good.
