    What did you pick today?

That sounds delicious, Tutter. I'll have to try that. . . if I can ever keep them around long enough to cook them! Oakland, are the 6' X 4' beds contained within that 12' X 12' area or is that in addition to it? My home garden is combined with my chicken coop/run area within a 25' X 11'...

the smallest garlic bulbs are rotting w/beetles in them?

Oh, I so agree with you on that one! In most recipes that call for garlic, I use more than the recipe dictates. In September we have tickets to a Dodger's game. The one thing I have to have at the game is the Gordon Biersch garlic fries. There are big hunks of garlic all over those french...

    Darn tomato eating critters!

Is that you, Mary Lee? :) Gee! Haven't chatted with you since the "old" BYC! :frow I had a nice long reprieve in tomato eating issues, but they started back up again in the past couple of days. This time I think it's something larger because there's a bigger burrow in through my tomatoes...

    Marianna's Peace Tomatoes

Unfortunately, no. So, I'll just have to take it back to the *orange store* and get my money back. They didn't have anything else that would work so I'll have to go to a nursery. Have you ever used chamomile tea as a fungicide...

    What did you pick today?

Wow, Oakland! You must have a pretty good sized lot up there in the city! Today I picked tomatoes (of course) and, and, and. . . . . my first green beans!!! :ya

    What did you pick today?

Tomatoes. And yesterday I picked . . . tomatoes. :/ I think perhaps tomorrow I might get to pick something else for a change. :fl

    Marianna's Peace Tomatoes

OK, I've been doing a load of reading. What I bought is specifically called Sulfur (S) or Elemental Sulfur. I believe what you're talking about is either the sulfur already made into a spray, made into a concentrate, or the Sulfur (W) or wetable sulfur, right? The sulfur I have is meant to...

    Marianna's Peace Tomatoes

I'm not sure it'd stay on the plants. It feels like tiny little pellets, not powdery.

    Marianna's Peace Tomatoes

Really?!! Everything I've read always recommended to plant in different beds each year. Given the size of my garden, it'd sure be easier if I could grow them in the same spot each year. OK, stopped off and got some sulfur. I was expecting there to be sulfur spray, but none was to be found...

If your in So. Calif great fun at Underwood Farm

It is a nice day trip. There are some nice shops, a petting zoo, and some tasty restaurants, serving apple dishes of course! I don't know if they're still taking place (there were some complaints about noise) but one of the farms used to hold Civil War and Revolutionary War reenactments...

    Marianna's Peace Tomatoes

Thanks for the clarification on the sulfur. I'll pick some up today. I don't plan on growing in the same location again next year. I usually rotate between 3 different beds, so I shouldn't be planting tomatoes there until Spring 2011. But, this also means that I haven't grown tomatoes in...

    Marianna's Peace Tomatoes

The Howard German has one darkish stem, but the other plants don't seem to have that. Could it be that I have two things going on? I did some reading on the sulfur. . . Do I want plain sulfur or the lime sulfur?

If your in So. Calif great fun at Underwood Farm

Yum! That sounds delicious! I'm glad they tasted as yummy as they looked! If you enjoy U-pick, then you definitely should check out Oak Glen. As Oakland pointed out, there're lots of things to do there, even when apples aren't yet ripe. Here's a link to their website...

    What did you pick today?

Yup. I got that same message when I was correcting our gabbing on this thread and trying to put them over to the new thread. All it means is that you're needing to slow down and wait a full minute from one post to another. It's probably there to keep spammers from wrecking the board.

    What did you pick today?

Still picking only tomatoes at home. At the church yesterday I picked lotsa eggplant, tons of beans, many peppers (both hot and sweet), and dozens of tomatoes. Most of it was provided for the food program, but I did keep some beans (froze them), a couple eggplant, a few peppers, and a few...

    Green beans/preserving

I just did this for the first time yesterday. It was pretty easy. Boil a LARGE pan of water. Cut the ends off of the beans. Cut into your preferred size. Using a colander or basket, lower the beans into the water. Set timer for 3 minutes from the moment the beans are in the water. Remove the...

Please help landscaping infront of porch! Update with pics!

Wow! It's amazing how just a few plants really softens the look and pulls your visual field to a totally new direction. Can't wait to see it with the spring bulbs! If I might make a suggestion, something like a potted plant would look lovely in that corner to the right side of the front door.

    Marianna's Peace Tomatoes

Great news and not so great news. . . . . . . . Marianna's Peace now has tomatoes - three that I've counted so far! But, I still have the dang bugs and now there's a new problem with all of my tomato plants. First - two pix of the new tomatoes! And another. I'm leaving this pic a bit...

Thanks for the heads-up. The blueberries look GREAT and your son is a little cutie pie! :) How were the berries? Have you ever been apple picking out at Oak Glen? If you time it properly, you can often do both apple and raspberry picking at the same time.

How do ya know when to harvest yer

I don't thin mine either. Instead I simply plant them at the "thinning" distance rather than the "planting" distance on the seed packet. I hate waste and, besides, it's worked out just fine so far. If they look a little crowded, then some little ones get to be boiled up and made into a nice...
