Well, I have the same problem here, but I think it's little buggers. Oakland (the tomato king!)suggested I go out to the garden with a white piece of paper, hold it under some leaves, and shake the plant. Sure enough, some little bug critters dropped off onto the paper. Give that a try first...
Hee hee hee. Squash has a way of doing that, Jordan. You think it's too little to pick, turn your back and it's the size of a baseball bat!
Everything looks great, J.! You're doing such a fabulous job!
When I was out in my corn yesterday I got to thinking about your stripey corn plant...
I realize it's not the question you asked, but my favorite recipe for salsa is the El Torito Salsa that is widely available on the Internet. I always make it fresh, so I don't know whether it can be adapted for canning purposes.
Thanks for your thoughts Tutter, Blurose, and Karanleaf. I just happened to wander back through this thread and found your replies. For some odd reason, TEG didn't let me know you all had replied. :/
Each of you has brought up some wonderful ways that folks can reach out with their garden...
Beekissed - As you know, each of us has our calling, you know, the 1 Cor. 12 stuff. ;) We had the means and the desire and the idea was born. OC is a very, very wealthy area and because of that and the blessing of wonderful weather, there is also great poverty and homelessness. To have the...
It never occurred to me that bean leaves were edible. So, I did a search on the Net. You might find this interesting:

I can't believe I haven't updated this in more than a month! So much has happened since then!
For a couple of weeks we have been picking large amounts of tomatoes, Japanese eggplant, many varieties of peppers (both hot and sweet), copious amounts of green and yellow beans, and the first few...
Congrats on your future corn! Doesn't it feel great to grow something yourself?
It'll be interesting to hear an update about which corn continues to grow the best. Be sure to report back to us!
(I love gardening experiments!)
I love peppers! Thanks for the well wishes, Tutter. I'm beginning to feel better. Heating pad and Motrin combo is the way to go!
I'm still pickin' 'maters. I'm seeing flowers on the squash and little tiny green beans so I hope to be picking those in the coming weeks! :D
Yesterday I picked a lone tomato at home. Then we went to the church garden and picked zucchini, straight yellow squash, Japanese eggplant, a zillion beans (pulled a back muscle in the process), and various peppers both hot and sweet. We only kept a handful of the beans, a couple squash, a...
An Eagle Scout has offered to build a garden shed for us at the church community garden for his Eagle Scout project. This will be a from-scratch shed, not a commercially available shed.
If you were designing a shed from scratch, what are some must-have details you'd include? This will be for...
 That's really funny, Oakland. When I saw that avatar earlier, I couldn't help but think of your little "issue."
Aren't you glad you're a Garden Ornament right now and not a Garden Gnome? :P
Thanks Brenda. I'll go on a poo hunt tomorrow. For now, I've sprinkled them with the cayenne pepper, put out a vinegar soaked rag on a stake, sprayed them with Oakland's toxic bug spray, planted basil and marigold - and so far so good. I've not lost any tomatoes since doing so. It's...
Nubsmum! That was funny!
Cassandra - Yes, try the cayenne pepper as well. Since I put both the vinegar rags and the pepper out at the same time, I didn't have a scientific sample to rule out which one was working. So far, so good. We haven't lost any since. Considering that last...
You bring up excellent points about food development for mass marketing purposes. The cost in taste and biodiversity is huge. I wonder if, to get back to our original discussion, some folks don't grow their own food for the reason that they have no idea just how good home grown food can taste...
Reinbeau - Thanks for straightening that out for us. We'll try to keep ourselves in line from here on out.
Tutter - That was very interesting about the dachas. I recall reading about them, before the fall of the USSR, and found them fascinating. As I recall, second homes are common in...
Well, I'm not sure why it is that some plants just survive over the winter in our weather. I have three plants going now that were from last year. I left them in, just to see if I could. The patio tomato (in a container) is still alive and has numerous tomatoes on it right now. I...
