OK, Oakland. It has been a week and I'm here to let you know the status and changes with the 'maters.
Stupice: Grew 22% in height.
German Pink: Grew 20% in height.
Anna Russian: Grew 53% in height.
Marianna's Peace: Grew 71% in height!!!! :D
Howard German: Grew 56% in height.
At 30...
Awesome Jordan! It's looking great! I'm really glad that you posted some update pix. I was thinking about this the other day and hoping it was going well for you. Glad to see that it is! :D
I look forward to the next installment!
Yes, it's quite easy to be quickly overrun with zukes! But, it just wouldn't feel like summer if it wasn't!
One year we had so many that we ended up creating a zucchini burrito filling that was pretty tasty.
2 lbs diced zucchini
1 sm. onion - diced
vegetable oil
Corn (we used a can, but if...
Thanks for the great list, Oakland! I have read about some of the varieties you've listed and look forward to trying them sometime as well.
Earthy and smoky? That sounds about right. I think I read that the Cherokee Purple makes a great salsa.
Another one I've read about is Black from...
I suppose it might have, but even though it was the same size when purchased, it was already smaller than the others by the time I put it into the ground. Perhaps I simply managed to get a runt.
OK, I'll feed them the worm poop juice next week and I'll measure the plants again at that...
Awwww. Been there, had that done to me as well. Although, in our case, it was two little nephews who picked 2 of the first 3 lemons on the lemon tree. A whole year was a looooooooong time to wait for lemons again!
Perhaps this is a teaching moment . . . . :D Maybe make a piece of paper...
OK Oakland, here's what I did. . .
I cooked up and crushed a bunch of eggshells and worked them in at the base of each of the tomato plants. I then dug down really, really deep into my compost pile and found the darkest and richest stuff deep in my pile. (aged compost made of a majority of...
Another thing about nasturtiums. . . Not only are they EASY to grow, they reseed very easily as well. The seeds are huge, so they're easy to pick up and store for future use. It is entirely possible to buy seeds once, then never have to purchase them again. :D
Wow! You sure did get a lot done. That's such a gratifying feeling and I bet you are really enjoying your day today!
After you're done at Rosalind's, wanna come to my place?
The teenage neighbor who babysits my chickens when we're out of town loves my home grown eggs. Her mom, on the other hand, won't touch them. Even though she knows they're better, it disturbs her to know *where* they came from. Even though she says she knows their environment is waaaaay better...
Chocolate milk cows?!! That's funny, and cute!
I agree, Tutter, and think it's really sad that kids don't really understand where their food comes from. But, why should they? For many kids, their folks don't cook. I mean REALLY cook. Sure, they heat up something from the frozen...
It has been a while since I've tested the soil, so I should probably do that. I fertilized with some Gro-Power Plus that I had on hand shortly after I planted them in the ground. All of the tomato plants received that. Like I said, all of the plants have gotten the exact same treatments.
I...
Yep, I get all the same comments as Oakland down here behind the Orange Curtain. I wear this badge proudly, and in doing so, I find that others start to think it's not too bad of a way to live. :clap
Don't give up on the young folks Beekissed. . . Sometimes these things skip a generation. ;)...
Suckers??!! I'd be GRATEFUL for suckers!
This little guy is only 5 inches tall and I've owned this plant since sometime in mid-March. It should be much bigger, like it's siblings we purchased at the same time. The others are Stupice, Howard German, German Pink (that one is HUGE), and...
Anyone have experience with these? After reading up on them (and how terrific they're supposed to taste!) I decided to plant one this year. I purchased all of my plants at the same time (back in March) from the same plant sale and all of them were about the same size when purchased. By the...
Tutter - I agree that it'd probably be best to rinse the seaweed first. Salt buildup can be a huge problem so it'd be best to not go down the route in the first place. But, depending on local laws, this could be a nice source for the garden. We do have several 'protected' beaches nearby and...
Glad to hear that the kumquat marmalade turned out well! That's interesting about the skins being sweeter than the flesh. I wouldn't have guessed it! So, does that end up as a sweeter marmalade? My favorite marmalades are the ones made out of the Seville oranges which are really bitter and...
I love your avatar! What sorts of citrus did you have in that photo? I can see oranges, grapefruit, blood orange. . .
That's great that you didn't have to give up fresh citrus when you moved up that way. Fresh picked is the best! I love to pick an orange off the tree and eat it when it's...
Tutter - Your weed tea and Maxi-Crop got me to thinking. I live about 3 miles from the ocean. What would happen if I just bagged up some seaweed and did the same thing with the tea composter? Would that work?
I'll keep my eyes open for barrels. I would imagine that one that had a spout...
