    Rhubarb in the south??

My MIL hasn't had any trouble growing rhubarb in Seymour (near Pigeon Forge, TN). I will say that when she lived in Bristol, TN, her rhubarb patch was more prolific. Whether it was because Bristol's summer temperatures are usually a few degrees cooler than those of middle & west TN, OR if it...

    Dehydrated okra - excellent!

If you like okra in soups & stews, using dehydrated okra is super easy AND delicious! I planted more than enough okra--on purpose, ;)--so, I thought I would try dehydrating it instead of trying to freeze it. :woot It turned out great! Just slice and dehydrate until crisp. No blanching...

    Just ordered my new canner

I have heard about community canning kitchens aka cannerys. Some still exist in smaller, close-knit rural areas. If one isn't around near you, I think it would be a wonderful to revive the idea even if a small group met at someone's home or church. If you form a group where one of your members...

    Teeny garlic

I plant garlic in the Fall also. Sometimes I plant a few cloves in the Spring, from the garlic that started to sprout in my pantry, but it is always smaller than Fall planted garlic.

    Just ordered my new canner

Wow, that looks sturdy and incredibly well made, much nicer than my Mirro. I would much rather pay a little more for something that will last for years than to pay less initially, plus the additional amount when an item needs to be replaced. hoodat--thank you for posting the link for us. I...

When can I plant peas for a Fall crop?

Thank you, everybody, for your replies. The snow peas have just been planted. I thought there were some shelling pea seed in the seed box, but there were none. Sigh. :(

Favorite thing to do with tomatoes

Before I make any sauce, salsa, marinated cherry tomatoes, can or dry tomatoes...dh & I have a tomato sandwich with plenty of mayonnaise or a BLT. Always! When the harvest starts to dwindle, I freeze whole tomatoes, straight off the vine, in large Zip-Loc bags or plastic containers. Those...

    No bees?!?

You might try using a soft-bristled artists brush to hand pollinate the flowers. Or grow Partenon Hybrid Zucchini , a parthenocarpic variety that can be grown under cover.

When can I plant peas for a Fall crop?

It was way too wet to work the soil this spring in time for a Spring planting of peas, so I'm hoping that fall planting will work for my location. I'm in northeast TN, a few miles from southwest VA, about 40 miles from the NC border...zone 6...the first killing frost occurs near October 15th.

    Just ordered my new canner

What, no link showing a picture of the canner? I don't like dealing with leaky gaskets either.

This ought to be a good one.....who is from BYC??

I was an unofficial member of BYC back when Garm owned it. I didn't actually join until Rob took over after BYC was offline for awhile.

    Pepperoncinis

I had the problem of mushy peppers in the past, too. I googled and saved this thread where a person vacuum processed the peppers. There are more pickled pepper recipes from other people in this link also. Hope this helps. Click here.

need a list of SAFE evergreen shrubs

There used to be yews on west the side border, which were dug out before we got chickens, thank goodness. There are a couple of rhododendrons in the front yard which my handicapped housechicken and her best friend used for 7 years as their daytime shady spot. patandchickens--what is the...

need a list of SAFE evergreen shrubs

We will be redoing the foundation plantings at the back of the house and the west side. The area around the back deck used to have ornamental grasses and dh decided he doesn't like that look anymore and wants some evergreens instead. The back deck stands 5 ft off the ground and the area...

    Guess what! Marigolds and chickens!

They didn't even try digging them up? Mine love to dig up anything freshly planted--whether in the ground or in a pot. That's why I have big, flat rocks around the trees and fist-sized river rocks in the flower pots to discourage their urge to unplant things.

another way to freeze green beans? Update--see post #7

Ordinarily, I pick my green beans & blanch them within a couple hours of picking, then partially freeze them in the bag before I vacuum-seal it. Last year's fiasco of not blanching the beans was an experiment because the woman assured me that there was absolutely no difference in quality. The...

another way to freeze green beans? Update--see post #7

Ugh, the beans did NOT turn out well at all. :sick Only if the beans are cooked long & slow in soups or stews with tomatoes , are the beans edible. Slow cooking these beans with a ham hock isn't enough. :rant Either my taste buds are way too picky or the woman that told me about her method...

    Freezing corn...

Like dipence71, I freeze corn-on-the-cob with the silks & inner husks intact and vacuum seal it. After thawing, the silks come off more easily than when fresh, IMO. I can't taste any off flavor when I freeze corn this way and I'm very picky about quality and taste. Too bad that I don't have...
