    Rain Finally!

We just got .7 inches of rain. That on a 30% chance is great! We are more than 10 inches behind this year and I have really been worried about a bad drought and it isn't even summer yet. Our pond that is five feet deep is down to 2 1/2 feet and I am worried about the survival of the fish. We...

    RIP Dear Aunt

So many plants passed down, as well as, the love of plants and gardening passed to so many of us. True heirlooms!

    RIP Dear Aunt

My dear Aunt Lucy left us yesterday. She was 93 years old and an extreme gardener! She didn't get her real wish which was to fall over dead in her garden but she got to have a garden last year and my mother made one for her this year which she strolled out to visit until she couldn't walk out...

    Fresh Raw Honey!

That 6 gallon came from 3 supers on one good hive and several frames from one super on another hive. It was a good haul but I have heard of much, much better. I have been hearing and reading about in the 10 frame supers to only put 9 frames with proper spacing and supposedly you get more honey...

    Fresh Raw Honey!

Honey has been found in pyramids that was still good! But, if it has too much moisture can ferment (taken on a day with high humidy or not all capped honey). Most raw honey is fine in the jars for years.

    Heritage tomato suggestions, please.

I will try to get back to this post a little later in the season. I ordered a mixture of heritage tomato seeds from sampleseeds.com and hope to evaluate and save seeds. The first to ripen is a large yellow that i like but not sure of the name will have to research. The seeds were only...

    Fresh Raw Honey!

I bought a "cheap" extractor from Dadant, $200. It spins two frames at a time and then I flip. I had borrowed one the last time but thought if I was to continue with this hobby I needed something myself. Manual everything.

    Fresh Raw Honey!

I have licked my fingers a lot the last few days. lol In fact, I had almost a half pint that I had left in a bucket over night on the back porch and it rained a little so absorbed up the moisture in the air and was very thin and couldn't be saved because it would have fermented, SO, into a...

    Fresh Raw Honey!

Saturday afternoon my son came by to give his old mom some help. He took off the supers of honey, brushed the bees off, handed them to his mother on the screened back porch, and my work began. My DH is sick with chest cold or something with fever and feeling really bad so having my son to do the...

    Green Bean Rust

What can we do about green bean rust? Such beautiful plants in our garden are going to be lost if we don't do something soon.

    Garden mobile

I love it! I have one a friend made me from shells, driftwood, and beads she collected from a remote island off Georgia coast that we go to most years. Neat to use available materials for a lot of the construction.

    Finally got bees

It takes clover a few years to really get established. My son planted in a cow pasture one year and it was the third year before really good stand of clover. Once there it spreads and will kill out the other grass. You can bet they have a source somewhere. Right now some of ours are on the...

    Finally got bees

We look in about once every two weeks, not necessarily all the way down. Just need to know when to add supers or to see if any disease or if for some reason they are making queen cells to swarm. We don't like to disturb often. They have found a honey flow somewhere else and will be back to your...

    Tonights Meal

I have 20 layers. The others I hatched this year. We will process about 30 for the freezer and will sell or give away most of the others. I like to keep 20-30 layers with my breeding roosters for next year. I sell a few dozen eggs a week to help pay for the huge food bill. lol

How deep do sweet potatoes grow?

I didn't have a problem with rotting. I used 32 oz. plastic fast food drink cups, put four toothpicks around the middle of the potato to rest on the rim and keep half out of the water and put the end into the water so only half of the potato is in the water. (run on sentence but you get the jest)
