I actually do pretty well with cat litter buckets (and anything else I can get my hands on) for tomatoes and pepper plants, and my container ones look better than the ones in the ground. Doesn't look pretty, but I don't really care once I start harvesting!
I have to soak them daily when it...
Here in Maine or here on TEG? Both are pretty swell, but Maine is pretty soggy and cold right about now. Couldn't believe I was building a fire to stay warm in June.
Hopefully all of our plants survived the downpour. They say we got 8+ inches of rain but it was significantly more than that in...
Thanks for this. I've been contemplating a soaker hose... but had no idea how to use it. Did one leave it on all day? Apparently not!
Think I'll stick to handwatering a few areas under plastic for now... mother nature is trying to drown all my non-protected plants this week anyway.
One thing you can do in the future to speed things up and not waste dirt/cells is to germinate in paper towels or coffee filters. Make the towel damp (wet it and wring it out). Place seeds inside. Wrap up. Place inside ziploc bag, place in warm spot (I use a seedling heat mat). Check every 48...
We get very few scorpions 'round these parts, ma'am.
I don't really need convincing to have ducks... rather, convincing that they were worth the pain in the winter... ice everywhere. I don't think they're worth that. Unless they help me grow a big prizewinner pumpkin.
I have 5 large ducks and they have a large 50 gallon rubbermaid tub as their pool (in addition to a rubber bucket that gets changed daily for fresh drinking water). The tub gets cleaned when it's gross, usually 2 times a week, but sometimes only once. I want to use the water to fertilize my...
Build way more ventilation than you think you'll ever need. A nice cross breeze makes the coop cooler in summer, too. Remember that when it starts to get dark, even when it's still hot out, the biddies go in the coop to roost. It's horrible to see them with their wings out, panting.
I'm in...
Mine died, too. It was looking great then all of a sudden it started getting yellow and brown on the leaves. I touched it and it pulled right out, it was rotten. However, the seedlings that I grew and planted at the same time as the grocery store transplant are still alive.
Growing VERY slowly.
Yeah, for pipes, around chimneys, etc. It's basically bubble wrap with foil put on it. Reflects light and heat and keeps it in there. It's attached with duct tape and wire ties and a few velcro strips for the doors to stay open.
With the seedling mats, the lights (2 sets on top, 1 on bottom)...
I start seeds inside, as well, although I have purchased plants in the past (who can resist?!) from the local greenhouse, but they're usually diseased. I promised myself that I would only do seeds this year, and I did. I'm proud of myself. I agree with the person who stated it staved off...
I'm about the same time as you here in Maine. I usually bet on mid-May to plant my plants outdoors, though, and watch the weather closely until the beginning of June. I plant mine inside 8 weeks in advance, usually. I keep a fan blowing on them most of the time to make the stalks thicker and...
OK finally got my plants in the ground. Here are my hoop house "giants" - two atlantic giant seedlings, one squash king seedling, one carolina cross watermelon seedling and a rouge vif d'etampes pumpkin seedling that is going to be my test for fertilizer a few days before everyone else in the...
First year I had this house I spent over 100$ on bulbs to plant in the fall. Every single one got eaten by a mole over the fall, winter and early spring.
Wish I hadn't of spent the money on the bulbs and the time to plant them.
Other than that, I wish the birds hadn't planted a bumper crop...
