To cage or stake tomato plants?

I'm using hog fence. The mesh is approx 1/8" in diameter. It is heavier than the concrete reinforcement stuff. So there's no way to bend it.

    Asparagus

I have gout. My foot doctor finally diagnosed it. Allopurinol does real well and it's cheap. I eat very little red meat and I don't drink wine. They used to call it the rich mans disease. That's not me. I would've hated to have it back in the 1800's. It's way too painful if not treated.

To cage or stake tomato plants?

I'm going to cut up a bunch of hog panels with a cut off wheel on a grinder. I'm planing on using 4 pcs and making a square cage attaching together with those hogclips. Any suggestions on how wide the sides should be?

    Flowers under tree

Thanks for the input. Last summer some kind of a larvae tried to attack the tree. I don't think it was pine beetle. That is a real scourge here in Colorado and a lot of places I guess, but whatever it was it stressed the tree out. Maybe I'll just go with some shredded wood chips. We had a pine...

    Flowers under tree

We live in zone 5b. There is an Austrian Pine that is about 20' in diameter at the bottom in our front yard. The lowest branches are about 4' off the ground. Under the tree is a circle of pavestones with dirt in the center around the trunk. We would like to put some perennial flowers in there...

    Getting grass back

I had a contractor do some work on the side of my house last spring with a skidsteer. He dug through all my sprinkler lines then covered them back up. When I turned the system on I had 2 out of 10 zones working. What a nightmare, had to find where the tears were. So my yard went all summer with...

seed rooling down our hill (our lawn)

Thanks. I did a back yard in sod once and it turned out great It was flat though. Looked a lot better than the front yard that the developer laid. Had all sorts of spots that wouldn't green because it was clay underneath with no soil prep.

ARGGG!!!! Fire ants have taken over my compost pile

Lived in Tx 7 years. Couldn't believe those fire ants. You wipe out a mound they just move a few feet down and start again. Sat on a curb once to change a tire and they crawled in my shorts, never sat on the ground again in Tx. They're so small you don't feel them till they bite. Good luck. We...

    cover crops...

Last year we tilled our garden, planted the seed and set up the soaker hoses. Our garden is 60x80. I had bought a couple round bales of barley straw that I planned to use to keep the weeds down. As I was rolling it out I noticed some seeds. A couple weeks later we're looking for sprouts coming...

seed rooling down our hill (our lawn)

Will sod stay in place? We have a walk out ranch and the slope drops 10ft over a 30 ft span. I was worried it might not stay in place. Don't really have the money to do a terrace with retaining walls right now.

    dogs vs lawn

Be careful with the stuff you feed the dog. I've heard it is mostly female dogs that cause the yellow spots. Reason is because their urine is more acidic to prevent urinary tract infections. The stuff you give your dog dilutes the acid and causes UTI. May want to ask your vet.

Those of you with extra freezers

We keep our upright in the garage and our chest in the basement. The garage does just fine winter and summer. Avg summer temp is around 88 but it does go up to 98 on occasion. We have a north facing garage that is not insulated. It usually runs about 20 degrees warmer than outside. Has gotten...

    Colorado Prairie Planting

Welcome to the high plains. When we first moved here I tried to till a garden using a regular tiller. The blades just bounced on the ground. I ended up going to Home Depot and renting their biggest tiller which is hydraulic. It is the only thing that will do more than scrape the weeds off. We...

    dwarf fruit trees

We have some apple trees with trunks in the 1.5 to 2.5" range. This year we put some 5" black flexible drain pipe around the trunks to protect from deer. Also put woven fence in a 5" diameter circle around each tree and filled with straw to about 18". The drain is slit of course but I was...

    Does altitude affect corn?

We have been trying to grow corn for 4 years. We usually plant about mid May. We are at 6500 feet and temps tend to stay below 90. We do get to 95 once in a while. They grow a lot of corn north of us. The elevation there is probably around 5200 ft. By the end of August our plans are only about...

    Please help ~~Strawberries??

How many plants would you recommend in an 8" x 4' bed that is about 16" deep. Will horse manure that's been sitting for about 12 months be ok to help the dirt and what else should be added. I read that strawberries stop producing after 2 years. Is that true and does it apply to the runners...
