What a beautiful find! Good for you for giving it a place to wait out winter.
We found a skink hibernating in a dirt pile once and after a little research it turns out they are native to this area but quite rare. :)
we sent boxes of pickles, salsa, hot sauce and Granda Mas' famous rolls. With all the commercialism of Christmas I think people like a gift that is something they can't or don't make for themsleves and our family knows how much we love to garden and make good things to eat.
It may not cost...
:yuckyuck Well they do play music during the "Local on the 8's". Joz, your answer I think really sums it up. Thanks you the great answer!
I just love it when weather happens. It is usually dry, mild and sunny here... how BORING! When there is a promise of moisture I'm like a little kid on...
Hi Greenthumb!
Grafted tomatoes were sold here this for the first time and they were very popular. I was told by several retailers that the trick to them is NOT plant them deep. Meaning do not plant the graft below ground.
I was also told to expect to see grafted pepper plants for 2013. We...
We have been using the lawnmower to suck up all the leaves this year. When composted with horse and chicken manure they decompose just fine come spring. I always worry if there will be enough!!! :D
Yesterday while putting up a bunch of salsa and hot sauce I got a small blob of Habanero sauce in my eye while filling the last jar of the day.
After doing a lot of tasting during the seasoning of three batches it really wasn't as bad as it sounds, but it did sting for a while. The funny thing...
With 30 plants you may have to leave some in unlocked cars, door steps, unattended shopping carts...
You should have plenty to get creative with. Happy canning! Oh by the way GET MORE JARS!!!
Thanks for the hot sauce tip Jared. I still have a couple of jars of hot sauce from last year, think I'll give it a try. Thankfully cucmber plants offer plenty of fruit to experiment with. :)
Hi April, I don't have a recipe with actual measurements by I can make some recomendations. I made some last year and it was a big hit so instead of finding a few from volunteer plants I grew 7 this year to make sure we have enough.
I like to smoke them a bit on a charcoal grill it gives them...
Does anybody know the difference between the green ones and the brown ones? I have seen green ones that are long and skinny like the pictures here and also brown ones that are kind of short and fat.
Do you think it may be a different stage in their life cycle?
Here's the brine recipe for DW's pickles that I use for spicy pickles.
1/4 cup pickling salt
3 cup water
1 cup white vinegar
For spicy pickles I finely chop jalapenos or habaneros and add some to each jar before adding pickles. DW seasons her pickles with fresh garlic, red chili flakes, a...
I've meaning to post our pickling process lately so here goes. So far this season we've put up 6 qt. of DW's famous garlic dills, 5 pt. of spicy pickle relish, 7 qt. bread & butters, 8 qts. sandwich slices and 4 qts. of peppers
The garlic dill recipe is a family standard that DW makes and I...
My apologies to all the mystery has been solved. About 6 weeks ago I topped off the two tomato beds with more soil after they had settled a bit. That soil came from the area where I had pulled my pathetic potato plants that did not produce any bigger than the one in the picture.
My thanks to...
