There's nothing better than have your own canned veggies from the garden in the off season, so much more flavor than the canned tasteless stuff you buy at the local grocery store!! :)
I was thinking the other day about how long I've been gardening, both veggie and flower. Come to think of it most of my life or at least since I was ten or eleven years old. You'd think since I'm 51 now that I would know a lot about it, but it seems that the older I get the more I realize how...
seriously though, I would take the cantaloupe and squash out of the big garden because they tend to spread out more than other plants, that way you'll have more room for a bigger variety of veggies in your big garden. :)
vfem, all I did is keep a notebook and scale outside by the door and every time I came in with veggies I weighed and wrote down veggie type and weight, at the end of the year I didn't break it down, not enough time, but I did add it up. This year I will do the same only thing is I will include...
Zone 7b here. I've already started my raised beds, I don't necessarily do square foot gardening I try to cram in as many plants per bed as I can  . So far I've got carrots, beets, lettuces, spinach and onions planted, and garlic and carrots that I planted last September still in the ground...
Last year I started keep track of how many pounds of veggies I've grown in my gardens, my gardens add up to a total of 600 square feet of planting space and produce roughly 305 lbs of veggies. I had a bad year with the tomatoes because I didn't stake them, big mistake, I lost 3/4's of the...
That is such a welcome sight, it puts a light at the end of the tunnel for the rest of us. I'm starting to see buds on my apple trees here, I'd say we'll be in full bloom in 2 to 3 weeks here in SC. :clap
Thanks Lesa, spring around here comes around the 2nd or 3rd week in spring, can't wait! From what you say I do pull the leaves off the plants or do I let them grow through?
I live in zone 7b, just about 20 miles south of Charlotte NC and I'm wondering when I should uncover my strawberry plants I have in my raised bed or should I just let them grow through the 6 inches of leaves I put on them last fall, anyone have advise for me? :idunno
Planted radishes, lettuce, spinach, beets, carrots and onions yesterday and my wife started tomato seeds for me today, 6 Cherokee purple, and 6 Russian tomato plants. I really want the Russians to grow well because the seeds have a history and here it is. My son in laws grandfather immigrated...
I'd love to start a 4 or 6 acre community type garden and rent out 4 by 8 up to 10 by 20 garden lots, believe it or not in my area could produce an annual income of well over 100 thousand a year. And I was figuring a 4 by 8 would be rented out at 5 dollars a month, 4 by 10 7.50 a month and a 4...
I never thought of it either, I just glanced at the uneaten carrot on the patio table and just threw it on the grill as kind of a joke and experiment, glad I did it...:)
