    Gardening with bats?

Sounds like a good price. I'd buy one if I could get one at that price. :)

    Anyone ever used these?

Not sure how cold you get, but you could always use one that is fairly air-tight and also use row covers over your crops. That way you would have twice as much insulation. Both greenhouse plastic and row covers can be ordered from greenhouse supply companies. Good luck!

Organic Fertilizer - Mother Earth New Article

Thanks for posting the recipe. Whenever I tried to read the article, my computer would crash. :hu I was curious what the recipe was, because I have had a real hard time getting kelp meal recently and one person mentioned everyone is making some fertilizer these days. Now I think I know what...

Drying peas for seeds for next year? help

You can harvest before they completely dry down . . . here is a good blogpost about it. Basically they say that once the pod starts to look like it is no longer receiving moisture or nourishment from the plant, you can bring it indoors to dry.

What is a good choice for a fast growing shade tree?

I was originally going to suggest horse chestnut, so I would vote for the yellow buckeye. But, I would be concerned about dropping nuts in your situation, which is why I didn't suggest it.

"FIRST BUILD YOUR GREENHOUSE"!!!!! Out of plastic bottles!

My greenhouse gets appreciably warmer than outdoors even on cloudy days. I have the doors open today even, because if I don't, if the clouds were to thin somewhat or we got a few minutes of sun here and there, the heat would accumulate over the course of the day.

What is a good choice for a fast growing shade tree?

I think poplar trees are usually grown as wind breaks because they are fast growing.

What is a good choice for a fast growing shade tree?

I was thinking empress tree when I read your thread title. I'm not sure if they really grow THAT fast. :hu But they are relatively drought tolerant, which makes them a good choice for a spot that gets a full day of sun.

    newbie, needing some SERIOUS hELP!!

How deep are your beds? Typically plants with confined roots (like say in pots) tend to not grow as tall as plants in deeper soil. Did you grow from seed or from starts? Like others have said, there are too many variables to pinpoint a cause. A soil test would probably help, but there...

    Is Vine Ripening Better?

Here is an article I found. The conclusion the author comes to is that you don't need to vine-ripen to get all the flavor. What I will argue, though, is that if you are planning to hot water bath can your tomatoes, you should pick them when they are ripe. If you pick them before they are...

    Is Vine Ripening Better?

In my opinion, once they start to get colorful, I can't really tell the difference between the ones I picked early and the ones I let ripen fully on the vine. However, I do try to let them vine ripen for the most part. I suspect "vine ripened" is a big deal if you are comparing it to regular...

Best Way to Enjoy Homegrown Celery?

Well, I found a buncha different recipes for the enchilladas . . . I chose one that was a little on the simpler side, so it did not have the tomatillos in it. (I didn't want to buy a bunch of ingredients just to try this dish). So the green tomatoes are just sort of a filler, because I will be...

    El Nino?

Yeah . . . while it is good news for some, it is not so good for others. In the Pacific Northwest it is going to be a long dry stretch and cause us headaches as we get into next growing season, as there will most likely be water shortages (no winter snow pack = no drinking water reserves). But...
