Best Way to Enjoy Homegrown Celery?

:lau That was my most immediate thought on how to use my celery, but I didn't remember the raisins. Hattie -- thanks for the tip about drying some for later use. So I can use dried leaves for flavoring? The leaves are beautiful so I would like to use them!

    Scared to eat Dessert!

Oh, I soooo hate it when that kind of thing happens! :barnie But with glass . . . that is one thing in my food that scares me the most, because I imagine what would happen internally if I swallowed it. If it was the can opener that broke the jar, odds are very high that the piece of glass...

    Duck Water and Growing Plants

Duck weed is pretty amazing. It seems to multiply from out of nowhere! The last time I tried a little duck weed grow op, the ducks broke in and snarfed it all down. It so happened a frog had come and laid eggs in with the duck weed and we had some tadpoles growing in there. Well, they...

Best Way to Enjoy Homegrown Celery?

Thanks Pat! I didn't realize I could freeze some . . . that is good to know. Yes, I guess I was looking for recipes that would revolve around the celery and not so much foods you could always add celery to. ;) Or possibly a raw use . . . not sure my celery tastes as good as what you once...

    Sage....

Here is some info on sage . It says you can make tea with it. :hu It also says you can make wreaths from it. We only use ours at Thanksgiving. Otherwise, I just like the flowers.

Best Way to Enjoy Homegrown Celery?

:drool OMG that sounds really good! I like your idea of cold celery soup. I guess the thought crossed my mind last week when it was hot, but I didn't remember thinking that until you mentioned it. :) Celery Au Gratin I will have to try! I still have some walla wallas that I grew, so I...

    Cover Crop?

Looks good, Ron . . . thanks for the more detailed description. I think I will have to try this. :D You know what the famous saying is about imitation, right? :)

    Duck Water and Growing Plants

I don't worry about it at all and I am kind of a germophobe, if you will. I just wash the produce well before using it, and I sometimes even accidentally splash duck water directly on the produce. Not a problem. Then again, if the ducks have anything of concern, I probably have it by now...

Best Way to Enjoy Homegrown Celery?

LOL Ron. :D I think your suggestion for cream cheese and walnuts, etc. sounds particularly good to me. Yes, I've got the open-pollinated celery with the red stalks (I can't remember what it is called right now). I have it growing on my deck so it doesn't get too much sun and I can keep it...

    Cover Crop?

Ron -- I like your technique for soil building. So . . . are we talking mostly animal bedding in your compost, or are there also a few bits of food waste too? Do you let the bedding sit for a certain amount of time before you plant it with squash, so it isn't too hot? Please elaborate! :D

    Canning Tomatoes?

EweSheep -- I think the best thing would be to add the cherry tomatoes to other tomatoes and also add lemon juice to the recommended levels before water bath canning. I don't plan on skinning my tomatoes at all, just running them through a food mill after cooking them for a while. From what I...

Best Way to Enjoy Homegrown Celery?

OK, I've got celery and no ideas on how best to enjoy it, besides the painfully obvious ones (like raw with ranch dressing). What would you make?

wow I should not be alone in the house with a credit card and

Never throw out a plant catalogue! (unless of course you get a newer edition) If you have to, bury it under some papers that you won't be delving into for a while, or file it away somewhere. That way you know where it is, but are unlikely to open it up unless you are ready to buy something.

Puget Sound and Western WA..what the heck with the heatwave????

Actually, sparkles, I think Chehalis was one of the hottest spots! Sorry you had to come visit during our hot flash! There was a flash flood in the North Cascades during that crazy weather . . . they had an emergency broadcast on the radio. I only heard it from a distance, and I thought...

wow I should not be alone in the house with a credit card and

I'll try anything new that is drought tolerant! :P Actually, if I want any new ornamentals or herbs, I try to grow them from seed too. But that does limit the available plants to choose from (which in my case is a good thing). It also helps to live somewhere where there are so many rocks...

wow I should not be alone in the house with a credit card and

How funny . . . until I found the downloadable catalogue, I went looking for exactly what was on page 18-19, but didn't see any photos on the website, so was sorely disappointed. :gig Edited to clarify: I searched for that plant type, without knowing it was the one on pages 18-19.

Puget Sound and Western WA..what the heck with the heatwave????

Sheesh! Well, be glad for your AC and your city water! :D Us rural gardeners can just go have our own pity party, I guess. :/

Puget Sound and Western WA..what the heck with the heatwave????

I think I am single-handedly running our aquifer dry. :( I'm not kidding. I am trying to establish trees on our property. This is year 2 for them and it has been a horrid drought. Our aquifer used to be rated as fine when we moved here, but suddenly it is an "area of concern." I am...
