Just a friendly reminder. I think we can all use one every once in a while. Yes, there is someone I am particularly directing this message to, but I think most of us let our inboxes fill up and could use the reminder. ;)
It is times like this when you wonder why you didn't marry a pastry chef! :/ My mom won't even bake cakes for my birthday anymore, yet I am always making tasty stuff for hers. Life is so unfair.
Maybe it is the olive oil you don't like? Maybe try it with a milder oil?
Yes, Big brown horse, the garlic flower buds/bulbs are called garlic scapes. They make a nice pesto don't they? I think you can buy the garlic scapes at farmer's markets, but they have a short season.
Oh, as soon as I saw Olivia, months back when you started this thread I thought: :love She adds a lot of character to your place. :)
Your garden is growing really well. I notice you have soaker hoses. I have been considering getting some . . . do you recommend them?
I just love your...
Oh sure, no problem, I have been attempting to do this type of planting this year too. The traditional way to do it is to make 20" wide mounds about a foot tall, plant about 5 corn in the middle, wait a week, plant beans around the corn, wait a week, then plant the squash around the outside of...
I think you are thinking about the three sisters? That means planting corn with beans and squash. The beans supposedly help the corn grow by adding nitrogen to the soil (I have heard that this isn't necessarily true, since most of the added soil nitrogen is associated with the bean roots). The...
OK, let me get this out of the way . . . :sick LOL
Well, the reason not to use pet waste is that they often carry diseases and/or microorganisms that are contagious to humans. So I would say, "NO!" But what you might consider doing is digging a compost pit for the pet waste and then only...
No way, you are really going to town! LOL It is fun to see someone else's creative process at work. I like the idea of adding little tea cups and tea pots, etc. I'm sure you will find just the right combination to make it super cute. Oh, I like both the idea of green or burgundy knobs, so...
Pay attention to the best timing at which to root whatever plant you want a cutting of. This is a big key to success. Become familiar with the basic types of cutting -- softwood, greenwood, etc. Those are probably the biggest things you should be familiar with. Look up each individual plant...
Yeah, noobiechickenlady, beer works, but then you have to clean up the mess. :sick
Coffee grounds have the extra benefit of adding nitrogen to the soil. :)
Sure it might work. I was listening to a gardening program on the radio and they were discussing slug problems and it sounded like no one had a foolproof method, but I'm not sure that I remember them discussing an electric fence for snail/slugs. I do remember they didn't have much positive to...
Hey HiDelight! I have one little shoot I just noticed of my black bamboo that has escaped it's pot. Want it? I should really just plant my bamboo in the ground already. The only reason I haven't is because of all the warnings you hear.
That recipe with the chard, pine nuts and...
Yes it is amazing how easy it can be to ignore being completely soaked through when you have something to accomplish. My limit is usually when my gloves are caked with mud. LOL
Glad you got something done.
Big brown horse -- Nettles are in the mint family. Ever hear of stinging nettle? I don't know if they have it in TX, as it seems to like moist soil. It is one of the few plants in this region that will bite you, if you get too close. :) This is especially good to know if you do a lot of hiking.
Me&thegals -- yes, it was very simple. What you do is harvest the nettles in April or so when they are still short (preferably 6" tall or so and before they start to flower). You cut off just the very top leaves, which should look more tender. Wear gloves, of course. Put the nettles in a pan...
