Saving onions and peppers until tomatoes are ready

I want to make homemade salsa but my onions, banana and jalepeno peppers are already coming and the tomatoes are still green. What would be the best way to keep the peppers and onions until the tomatoes are ready? Freeze, dehydrate???

Jackpot! Cow manure / top soil?

I hit the jackpot today finding out that my neighbor has an unlimited supply of fully composted manure! He's been hauling it from his farm to where our properties join. There are HUGE piles of it and it's been there for more than two years. This cow manure is at least 2 years old and fully...

    Frost bit veggies

I jumped the gun and planted too early. Lost several tomatoes, squash and pepper plants to an unexpected freeze. Most were dead but others have leaves that are just somewhat blackish and seem to be recovering. Question is are they worth saving? Will they produce? Or should I start new ones? thanks

    Unidentified mushrooms overnight!

These type of mushrooms came up in my garden raised beds and mulch overnight. Does anyone know what they are? Are they a problem? Edible? Poisonous?

It is only supposed to be 42 today. Do you still think that's ok for in the cold frame?

    Problems w/ hardening off

I've been trying to "harden off" my broccoli, cauli, and brussel sprouts but the weather here is very crazy. It is in the 60's one day and then in the 30's. I got everything outside in the cold frame for a each day a few days in a row but then had a few days of freezing cold and wind. I couldn't...

    Anyone starting seeds yet?

Approx. 230 little sprouts at this house and 30 more just started yesterday. (herbs) The 230 include perennials, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, peppers, tomatoes, brussel sprouts. Broc., cauli., and cab. will go in the garden in about 5 more days. The brussels need need a little longer and of...

    Jiffy for starting seeds

I've used them for the past 2 years with great success. Makes transplanting very easy and roots are less disturbed. You can buy pellet refills and keep the same greenhouse. It does take a long time for the mesh to disintigrate but I didn't have any problem with it inhibiting the roots.

    Newbie starting seeds indoors

Don't start over! I'm a first time seed started this year too and I made the same mistake with the light. I ended up with a bunch of "leggy" plants...all kinds. I also used the Jiffy pellets and my lights were immediate but too far away. So anyway, I took all the really tall ones and VERY...

Cold Frame - what temp. can stuff go out?

Thanks!:)I was wondering about when to put them out and not in the frame. I actually have so many started that they can't all fit in the cold frame anymore. tomorrow some will go outside on the table (depending on the wind) we live on top of a hill and so have wind/breeze pretty much all the...

Cold Frame - what temp. can stuff go out?

Thanks....that sounds like a good plan. It was about 60 in the box today so the broc, cauli & brussel stayed out pretty much all day. Gonna increase it like you say and thinking about making some type of cover for the 4'x4' bed they are going in. Just in case of drastically bad weather. Do you...

Cold Frame - what temp. can stuff go out?

I'm in zone 7. Last year I put broc, cauli and cabbage in at the end of Feb.. that was great for the cabbage but the broccoli was too late. Almost all of it bolted! I'm shooting for the end of this week or beginning of next week for the broc. at least. With the mild weather this year, I'm...

Cold Frame - what temp. can stuff go out?

My first cold frame is done. 1/2 is planted with lettuce, kale, chard, radishes, beets, etc. etc. The other side is designed to bring out trays of seedlings to "harden". It is about 44 degrees outside today but inside the box is 55. Cloudy and overcast. I really need ot get them hardened b/c...

    Anyone starting seeds yet?

This is my first ever cold frame. One side is layered with rock and dirt for planting seeds and the other side is layered with rock, stone, and pebbles, creating a heat mass. that side will be used for "hardening" flats of seedlings. The center has stepping stones for easy access. the bed is...

    Cold Frame problems

I understand what you mean about the drainage but I'm afraid I should have thought about my location before I dug the hole. Oh well, "live and learn" "Nothing ventured, nothing gained" "If you don't suceed at first......blah blah.... Thanks for all the comments!
