It's good you pointed it out, Steve. Most herbalists don't even use it internally any more and if they do, it's in very, very limited amounts and under very strict supervision. I also limit what the chickens get...about 2 largish leaves a week amongst the 6 of them is all I dole out. They...
I put in 2 plants last spring...to use for herbal remedies and such...and the chickens ended up getting most if it...they're crazy for the stuff! This year we have bunnies too, and I'm starting new compost bins so that comfrey's gonna be working overtime :) I dunno about seeds either...I...
I wonder how long the effect will last. Sure won't hurt the garden since ammonia is used as fertilizer...and it definitely does keep dogs away...burns their noses just like ours...but that's when it's wet...I think the odor diminishes as it dries. Will be really interested to see how it works...
Red, I also find the commercially prepared Harvard beets a tad too sweet. That's why I make my own "brine"...so I can adjust the sweet/sour component to taste. To "harvard" them, I just warm the juice up and add enough cornstarch to thicken. We don't often have them that way though...we like...
If it were me, I'd leave the medicated stuff. Totally a personal opinion, but I'm trying to get away from that stuff, which is why I'm trying to produce as much of our own food as we can, so our critters are only treated if they're actually ill.
For that poopy butt, I'd suggest keeping it as...
I pickle my own...they're about the easiest thing to do ever. After picking, I cut the greens down to an inch or two from the beet, then cook them whole...usually do it outside so it doesn't stink up the house. When cool, the skins slip off nicely. Then I slice them and put 'em in a pan. Mix...
One of the top things to help with cholesterol and lots of other issues is garlic. It does need to be fresh though...processing or cooking greatly reduces its efficacy. I love the stuff but unfortunately it gives me dreadful indigestion :( I've yet to try rubbing it on my feet though...
I can certainly relate...we didn't have the hamburger helper so much but veggies in our house were peas, carrots, corn and green beans. The carrots were fresh (from the store) and the others were all canned. Later on after they retired and could do their own gardening, they added broccoli and...
That's what I would do. Once they have their feathers, they should be fine without much extra heat as long as it doesn't get below freezing and if they have a small enclosure to protect them from the elements that will hold their body heat for them.
Oh, I love galanthus! That's usually what blooms first for us as well...a real herald of spring, and so nice to see some color!
No blooms of anything here yet, but I did notice yesterday that the tulips are up about 3 or 4 inches, there are some volunteer Bachelors Buttons growing and the...
Usually it's the leaves that come first...the round stalks that have the flower buds come along later, so if it's just the leaves you snapped, they could well come back and you'll still have flowers.
Does looking at it and sighing count? It's still just a tad early to do much, although we did have a gorgeous day yesterday...full sun and 60+ degrees....took care of almost all the last new snow we got. I was thinking it might just almost be time to get the peas in the ground...but we can...
You could put a bunch of bottle towers out there and have lots and lots of growing things...and it would only take about 4 to 6 inches around the perimeter of the "fence"!
We have 2 pretty much identical nest boxes but for whatever reason, they will only lay in one of them...they all love to sleep in both of 'em but will only lay in one, LOL. They too love to "re-arrange the furniture"...one gets in and scratches all the straw out, the next gets in and piles it...
Hello, and welcome from a transplanted Canuck living in Colorado!
As Marshall mentioned, fluorescent lights are an indoor gardener's best friend. You can generally get the 4 foot shop lights for a very reasonable price and the plants do very well with them. If you have room to make some open...
