I know a picture says a thousand words, but I don't have my camera handy at the moment. I got a berry bush in a swap and it arrived bare rooted, without leaves and the tops are black and curled over...
Is it even save-able? Or should I just chalk it up as a loss?
My "An Instant Guide to Medicinal Plants" book says it's English Plantain. We've got loads of it in the pasture, as well as the common plantain. Here's some of it's uses:
'Demulcent, expectorant, diuretic, astringent. The fresh leaves bring relief to minor cuts and stings, and stops bleeding. An...
Hmm... well, I suppose I'll have to tear out the nightshade then. I can plant the garden near the wild cherries and use the other side for the sheep. Geez... this place. I'll find some other deadly plant as soon as I go to purchase sheep, I'm sure.
No I don't have a horse, but was considering getting a pony for the kids in a few years. I guess I'd have to use the goat pen on the other side of the house for it though. That's all tall oaks and maples.
Pardon my ignorance, but how do cherry leaves effect horses?
Will it effect my garden at all? I plan to over haul and till half the pasture for a garden in the spring, since it's so late in the season already. I'll use the other half (near the cherry trees) for the sheep, when we get those. Would that work?
Okay, I ran out to snap some new photos. I've got about a DOZEN of these trees, if not more. They have bark ranging from smooth with some roughness to REALLY rough. Here's 4 pix of the most common looking ones and a picture of the bottoms of the leaves.
I think they might be SOME type...
The fruit at the top of the tree seems to be much larger. Maybe half of my fist, so half a real apple. I'm hoping their real ones. Can you make applesauce with crabapples? I usually buy a few bushels from the local farms and make a ton for the boys during the fall. Maybe I can cut out the middle...
My mother suggested drying them out on trays in the basement during the winter. I think that'd promote mold and such. I'll collect them and let them dry on the porch.
Once they turn black, they're ready to 'peel' and crack open? I'd like to crack them all and store them in an air tight...
I'll have to double check tomorrow. I didn't notice any barbs when I was holding the plant still to look at it, so maybe they're just hairs. They're under 6 inches tall and there's tons. Yes, the woods are open and very sunny (in the rare event we GET sun, it's rained here all but 3 days since...
Thanks :D And yes, we're moved in. No where near done renovating or unpacking though. We've been here since June 30th, but just finally got internet and cable in this morning. I'm going to make my blog public again, so everyone can see how the house is coming along...
