    Amkuska's 2025 Garden

Root riot cubes definitely make a difference in how fast they sprout. The first one is up today, 4 days since planting. Just one. I'll be potting up the "Tiny tomatoes" today, and possibly planting another round of peppers.

    Amkuska's 2025 Garden

I decided to plant an identical set of tomatoes (6 each of 4 varieties) in the same little starting pots, but this time with regular potting soil. I'm going to compare their roots in 2 weeks to the roots from the tomatoes planted in root riot cubes, to see if they really are bigger or if I'm...

    Sentry, Baymule’s Livestock Guard Dog

I've added Sentry to the "Quiet Place" on my blog. If you like, you can light a candle for him there, and so can everyone else. I know it's a silly thing to do, but it would have made me feel better to have something like this when Rocco passed. I used a picture with no kid in it since it's not...

    Amkuska's 2025 Garden

Garlic has not been disturbed! I did find a spot in my frost cloth that looks like something was trying to get through it (scratch marks, oddly, not tooth marks) but the garlic is healthy and intact. I'm really happy about it. I repotted my tomatoes and took some fun photos of the roots. I'll...

    Amkuska's 2025 Garden

I will definitely give it a go and see if planting it a little deeper helps. Thank you for the tip!

They were not. The planting guide I got with my original one said they should have their little top knot sticking up out of it. As for hungry daughter -- she totally would too. She just today discovered green onions (we seldom serve because they are the bane of my son's existence) and she is a...

Thanks for this. I don't have voles, mice are definitely out there. They're well controlled by owls, hawks and eagles though. It may be an enterprising young mouse decided to snack on my garlics. Went out and replanted today, covered with a frost cloth. Here's a chewed one.

I've never had anything bother my garlic. I'll replant today and take some photos before I put frost cloth across it to keep the Snacker away.

    Amkuska's 2025 Garden

I went out to check my garlic bed to see if they'd sprouted much and...and...something ate them? At first, I was puzzled because I couldn't find any garlic where I planted, but thought maybe a storm had covered them over. Eventually I did find one though, pulled up and with bite marks in it...

    Candy from the Old Days!

My daughter wanted to know how far back candy went. It turns out, candy goes all the back to ancient egypt. People would make candy by dipping fruits and such into honey. :)

YES!! This could be fun. Let's see here. February - The month you chip hopefully at the ground in the hopes it will magically be not frozen. April - Sweet lies of warmth, followed by frost, followed by warmth. May - The real growing month June - Weed, weed, weed, weed, *blink* How are there...

    Amkuska's 2025 Garden

I'm happy to take it as something to laugh over! I admit, I didn't think about Chinese new year or Aztec calendars/non-traditional calendars. We should make a TEG calendar, but redo the months from most important to least important gardening wise.

It's very hard to see people's emotions on the internet, so I'm going to assume you are not trying to be mean here. I do view everyone here on this website as friends.

Because I have a grow tent, starting after the new year didn't properly represent my "gardening" calendar. For me, the new year starts with the first seed instead.

    Amkuska's 2025 Garden

Going back to this @flowerbug I've had a chance to look into this, and I think you may be on to something. I think we humans tend towards extremes. We learn that 'organic material' is what we need and that rocks in the soil block root growth or something, and we go crazy trying to eradicate...

More little tomatoes are up! I'm planning to go through my seeds today and see if I have anything else I want to plant. It's so exciting.
