One more suggestion to ponder.. My mother who's a few hours from you in Newport couldn't handle being part of most CSA's because it's only her -- and most CSA's don't want to deal with fractionary shares or similar -- the flip side of the coin is what to do with those items that you're just not...
We've actually got a bin like the one shown in this link which is where we got it.. It works well as long as you take care of them.. Our first batch died when we had some issues at home with people being in the hospital,etc.. We've since bought another batch of worms from the farmers market and...
Thanks all.. I think in my case (I'm in the Los Angeles area), our piles will have more of a tendancy to dry out -- particularly during the summer months. I guess I'll have to actively check them perhaps twice weekly to ensure they're still moist. I think in my case I'll plan on turning the...
Ok.. So I'll fess up that I've tried to make compost many times but have never been able to follow-thru and ended up with dry piles of old grass/weeds that don't resemble anything much.. I've also tried building spinning drums and the same turns out there too.. I've now started a new fresh pile...
I was going to chime in but was late -- our farmers market is VERY busy & competitive -- I frequently see the same produce being sold at different vendors for the same price.. So, as a buyer, it comes down to whether they're organic vs non-organic or how a particular item/basket looks visually...
I figured since they're like chard or spinach in that regard.. Hmm.. I might have to make some spinach salad -- got some of that ready to go too.. Yum!
Thanks all.. I did find, after the fact, a recipe that used bacon instead of ham which I suspect would be OK.. I guess I could also just cut-down on the ham and try that for starters.. I just don't want to waste these huge leaves this lone plant gives off.. I've got probably a dozen leaves I...
Hi all.. We've got one HUGE collard greens 'bush' that has tons of leaves that are ready to go.. We tried a recipe care of Paula Deen for Collard greens but my wife & kids aren't that enamored of the overwhelming ham flavor going on. Do any of you have any recipes that aren't loaded with ham...
We've successfully taken out a gopher Herd with a Black Hole gopher trap which looks like one of these
They work great but take a bit of patience to set properly.. However, once we put one in an active tunnel/hole, it ALWAYS was sprung the next morning. We took out at least 6 with this trap...
Thanks all.. Not sure what I was thinking with Kale.. I guess I just had it in my head.. My neighbors were the first to eat some when we trimmed it back about a week ago.. Needless to say it grows like a weed and is almost the same size it was then -- >2' across. I guess it likes the hydroponic...
Ok.. I've had a few PM's and SweetMissDaisy will be sending off a card to Hoodat's home in San Diego on behalf of the TEG group. She's got his contact info and is good to go. Hopefully we'll hear something at some point.
I've not noticed the stinging issue unless I grab the stems but I did notice the leaves seem to have itty bitty hairs on them.. They look like they might be related to the stinging nettle..
If it helps, I've got his name & address info.. He sent me some seeds a while back SASE.. If someone wants to PM me, I can forward the info -- I don't want to post it here -- or if you can wait a few days I can get a postcard written up and do it myself..
Do we just want one to be sent or one...
I generally know what we did buy and certainly what we did not buy.. I know we did not buy bok Choi or Cabbage but we did buy Kale and a few other 'greens'..
You know what.. We did buy Collard greens and I think that's what these must be after poking around on the web..
