Seed Starters vs. Planting Directly in the Garden???

As mentioned, for us northern gardeners starting tomato, pepper and such is necessary or buying started plants. Years ago we had a neighbor whom was rated as a master gardener by the county extension service. She would start pepper plants very early and repot them twice before finally planting...

    Cold Hardy Berries

Tough to grow those acid loving plants like blueberries out west. Average ph around here is 7.2 and even with years of amending I still killed many blueberry plants.Time will tell if those Honeyberry blooms survived and if fruit will set. I think a common problem with cold hardy or cold hardy...

    Question about Pepper planting

A thousand plants yikes! I have my hands full with 100 pepper plants. Ive found that two plants together grow out about the same as one plant by it self. In the garden I put single plants in north/south rows a little closer than recommended, about 8 inches apart causing them to growing into...

Sounds like a winner. So how would we do this, exchange addresses and mail the packages? What is the seed count we would send? If possible I would like 80 plus seeds. I have many saved from 2013. If not, no problem.

    How to plant onions

Long day onions grow well in this zone such as the sweet spanish or walla walla. A fellow gardener showed me how he started them from bulbs and the trick is after they get a good start pull the dirt away from around the bulb leaving little more than the roots covered. He grows massive walla...

    Corn Thread for 2014

baymule, I would gladly trade corn seed with you or anyone else that would like to. This Sunshine corn was grown miles from any other corn so purity should be there, right? lol Anyway I am looking for a flint or a flour type, preferably a shorter plant and (well) under 100 days or what ever...

    Corn Thread for 2014

I have been planting a variety called Sunshine for several years. Its a shorter plant, only 4 to 5 feet tall, and stays longer at harvest than Golden Bantam. Got the original seed from Victory Seeds. Says it was developed at NDSU. Great plant for the cool and windy summers on the northern plains.

A new Garden Invader in my state.

My pest problem are minimal compared to other places which I read about. The normal lack of snow cover during the winter in combination with multiple bouts of extreme cold has a lot to do with it. Frost line rumored to be at eight feet this year. Last average frost - May 20th, by mid July the...

problem with tomato seedlings, possible disease/fungus, need advice

If you are getting water/fertilizer, on a young plant especially, when you water and have no or poor air circulation, this could cause spotting similar to that. I use a pedestal fan on a timer to circulate several times a day

A new Garden Invader in my state.

In recent years alterative crops such as sunflower, safflower buckwheat and canola to name a few, have become big in using as a rotation crop with the hard red spring wheat which is planted widely through this area. Well along with the canola came a flea beetle with a voracious appetite for...
