2023 Little Easy Bean Network - Beans Beyond The Colors Of A Rainbow

Everything went off the rails again, but I have them ready to go with a USPS package pickup request for tomorrow. I just put a variety of the Davis in, separated by plant, in case you want to keep them and/or work with them. That's what was throwing me the most -- the plants and green beans...

That's a really good way to look at it... it always feels like such a failure when a variety does poorly (or doesn't make it), but it really is logistically impossible that every variety will always sprout and grow perfectly.

@flowerbug, you are totally right, that's got to be what I did. You are always so good with the tech tips! I updated the pictures, and will attach the Davis pictures separately since we're limited to 10 pics. I've never used Google Photos before so it's been a learning experience... my phone...

2023 Little Easy Bean Network - Beans Beyond The Colors Of A Rainbow

Welcome to the Latest (2022 Bean) Show on Earth! 🎪🎪 *hangs head in shame* It was just one thing after another all winter, until I got into the cycle of being ashamed it was taking so long that I put it off longer… like ya do. Well, hopefully this will at least get y’all psyched up for planting...

2021 Little Easy Bean Network - Bean Lovers Come Discover Something New !

Okay, I found three seeds left in the original LEBN envelope, and a bunch from the 2019 growing season. I usually bag enough blossoms to at least fulfill the LEBN return, but all the bagged ones got used up this year and last year; the 2019 ones are all unbagged. @Artorius , I'll send the...

I did a trade with a gentleman in Beligum a few years back. It's such a small world! :D I laughed so hard when he told me his method of getting beans through customs un-officially; he says: "I think my English is not so good and I accidentally write 'beads' on the form". I've never had any...

I figure I can send some back to @Bluejay77 , and then he can include them in your "official" import box next year? That way hopefully they won't go missing in customs before they get to you. Since they're cursed. ;D Let me check how many I have left, and then I'll split them between us. I...

T They're really neat! Nobody I've talked to here has heard of one before, even though they're native to the Pacific Northwest and apparently fairly common. It took my biologist sister a couple hours to track down what it was after it popped out of a burrow next to me when I was bushwhacking...

@Bluejay77 , do you have enough starter seed left for Artorius? If not, I can send you most of the ugly seed I have, so he can give it a try next year. Seems like the first step in curse-breaking is always discovering the curse. Now that we know it's cursed, we can fix it!

They were transplants with a couple sets of leaves on them; the rabbits didn't actually bother them in the spring when there was a bunch of other greenery to eat, but once that 100+ heat wave set in in the summer they started chewing through the stems of the pole beans. Extremely frustrating to...

I loved Kroatische Stange. I remember it growing like crazy, although I just checked my records and it produced about 4 ounces of seed. I'd only received two seeds from Bohnen-Atlas, though, so it still felt like a good return. :D I'm going to grow it again next year as a control bean.

Oh my gosh, I was literally just thinking that. I have been working on Frost as a network bean since 2019 and have never yet gotten enough good seed to send back. 2019 was extremely poor quality seed in a season where almost everything else grew flawlessly. 2020 was actually better quality so I...

Spending our snow day getting caught up on bean news (this "snow week" seems like it's going to be an annual tradition!), but did want to chime in on saving shellies. The first year I saved seeds, I tried to save literally every seed, and had a bunch that ended up getting moldy when they...

Happy 2021! I'm a bit slow keeping up with the threads but always get there eventually. :D Let's see if this posts right... *** Sneaking in with the "first" bean show of 2021! lol This was an interesting growing season with a number of experiments. My first bean season back in Washington...

Sneaking in with the "first" bean show of 2021! lol This was an interesting growing season with a number of experiments. My first bean season back in Washington, and I had forgotten how bad the slug pressure was. The location I was growing most of the plants was nice an sunny in the spring, but...

Ha, true! It's good to know you haven't had much trouble besides that one plot that got mosaic virus. I think I'll probably ignore crop rotation til I start seeing problems (and knock on wood, no problems for a long time!).

I'm so far behind in this thread, but today is my catch-up day (since we're stuck inside because of all the wildfire smoke). I am curious, Russ, how you manage disease when planting in the same locations every year? (I'm planning for next year's garden and was trying to plan in some crop...

Okay, another totally random bean question for the bean people. ;) I got ahold of a couple Phaseolus vulgaris varieties from Central/South America, which have some of the prettiest seedcoats I've ever seen. I planted some last year and got nothing back, but last year was such an awful bean year...

Interesting! She's on the peninsula in Washington state, which is typically damp and cool; but maybe the temps were higher this year than normal. Pollination was my first guess, but then I second-guessed myself, with the assumption that if the blossom didn't pollinate, the plant either...

2020 Little Easy Bean Network - An Exciting Adventure In Heirloom Beans !

I had someone pose a bean question just now that I don't know the answer to, but I figured you guys would! :) She is a Master Gardener but not much of a bean person. She grew scarlet runners this year, and started picking crunchy-dried pods today to save the seeds -- and there aren't mature...
