@Blue-Jay I'm mailing the bean-post this morning. I'll be including three of the four...sadly the Hallados Grandos just didn't produce for me (big healthy looking plants but only a few beans really late in the season). The three I'm returning are the Romanian Large Plum Speckle, Lucie and...
I'm FINALLY going to get my handful of Network beans in the mail today I hope. It was a strange year and of the four network beans I was growing, 1 was a total loss to rabbits and 1 was basically a failed crop (Croatian Monstrance) I took a picture, but it's not even enough to ship and I'm a...
It's been a very weird year for my gardening efforts, but I can plainly say that only the network beans get the special "move into the garage" treatment!
I planted those on May 7. I have a ton of the seed so I wasn't too worried if the weather didn't cooperate. We've had really strange weather this season though...way more summer like than spring so things do seem to be farther along than normal this year.
Total gardening geek post, found my first bean blossom of the season this morning. It's our go-to family bean that we've grown for years, it's a French climbing bean called Algarve which I purchased from Park Seed probably 15 years ago. It's definitely the little things that make me happy in...
Lost a handful of pole beans to rabbits, but not my network beans thankfully. I'm in the middle of Indianapolis, but we have tons of rabbits largely because they don't have any predators (and my dog is no help). They don't seem to go for the raised beds, but today's project was to try and...
@heirloomgal, I grew the Gabarone Sugar in 2018...it was a very slow growing pole bean for me. Oddly enough, I put some notes and pictures on the 2018 version of this thread - if you search Gabarone, you'll see the posts. It looks like mine could've used an extra month but I did get a decent...
Thank you! I've got very limited space to work with and the raised beds are a really nice option. We're in an urban area and the soil isn't ideal so this setup works really well for a small salad garden and of course beans.
OK, problem hopefully solved. But if these turn out to be legit pole beans I'm going to probably need to come up with some more...but I'll cross that bridge should I get to it. With the crazy weather we've had, it's like the beans exploded from the ground - these seeds were planted on 5/14 and...
@Bluejay77 Looks like the Croatian Monstrance Bush may have some different ideas about their direction in life. I think part of my day may involve working in some supports.
@heirloomgal and @Bluejay77, really curious to see this article you guys are referencing but ran into the Globe and Mail subscriber paywall. There really aren't a lot of seed articles these days (or ever?) so I'd be interested to see what they had to say - do either of you have a way to share...
OK, I'll give them a try, I like the pole limas! I had these growing in an area along a fence and didn't have much time as they didn't dry until basically winter. The vines and all were just left until I started getting the area ready to plant this weekend and I found the pods once I pulled...
I was cleaning up some of last year's garden today and found a few seed pods which I missed. Several were in sad shape but a few looked airtight. These are the Presley pole limas from @Bluejay77 I grew last year. Are seeds that over-wintered in the garden any less viable than the ones I cared...
