I appreciate the support on a very deep level. I also understand that the person who previously called me panicked and hysterical over my concern for family in the face of this virus is committed to their stance regardless of the effect on others. It’s a logical conclusion that someone unwilling...
I really appreciate the offer. We have been in contact quite a bit since dad passed. Its hard to talk about over the phone really. We don’t like to cry at each other so we chat about his daughter, the news, and send each other funny internet pictures. I think some of our healing will be delayed...
I lost my dad and grandmother last month. Grandma was 92, dad 62. Dad was grandmas primary caregiver, lived next door, and was so careful to try and keep them both safe. He retired to avoid the exposure (worked at a casino) and started ordering groceries delivered, disinfecting them, stopped...
I am experimenting with some tight "biointensive" spacing this year. I have dwarf sweet corn that only grows ~ 3-4' tall. I planted in 6" grid spacing (6" in row, 6" between rows). 😬 I'll be sure to report back somewhere in here how it went. I assume water will be the most important factor I can...
I think it's a great idea as long as each post is specific. It would be nice to read a post and thread just devoted to Black Krim tomatoes for example, describing taste, growth habit, determinate/indeterminate, fruit size, avg. yield/plant, spacing suggestions, etc. I'm sure those sharing their...
I hear you. I put up a bean trellis months ago before beans could go in. What do you know, that whole bed was a huge patch of Snow on the Mountain that came up about a month later. Since the weather got nice I've been avoiding addressing it because it's such a pain. I finally ripped it out...
Usually does the trick for us. Husband spent hours watering some of the new trees yesterday, thunderstorms brought us a half inch of rain overnight. Not that any of it went to waste - I'm sure the plants all made the most of it.
That's probably how I'll have to garden here on out for the hot days of this summer. It nice today - lower humidity and I have until 11 am before it hits 75*, so I'm rolling out to see what I can get done. My schedule's off and I've been staying late and sleeping in. S'pose its time to use an...
I have been too busy to even read or post much! My tree order came in last friday: 500 hybrid willows for three sides of the property, 5 cherries, 5 plums, 5 filberts, 4 oaks, and 35 mixed conifers. I used a week of my vacation to get these squared away. We made great progress friday and...
I am trying to incorporate more self-seeding herbs and flowers into my gardens to reduce the annual workload. I’m looking at things like dill, cilantro, violets, ground cherries, and strawberry spinach. I typically mulch all my beds with 3-6” of grass clippings to keep weeks down (a few beds...
@Pulsegleaner @Ridgerunner @Zeedman
It’s chives!
Also the strawberries are blooming. They are indeed wild- as I found them all over my woods and well. We’ll see if they’re edible or if I can beat the birds and mice to them.
This is what my packets said for peas, beets, turnips, radishes and carrots. But my ground was soft enough to work over a month ago - we've had two snows several inches since then and prolonged periods below freezing. I wasn't sure if they really meant it for such places.
@Zeedman the snow finally left this morning! Its warming up but still too wet to mow here, maybe tomorrow. I was thinking about direct-sowing my carrots, turnips, radishes, and beets today. Do you think its too early?
@ducks4you here are some shots of the strawberries I’ve found.
Also a new mystery plant!
I harvested some of the green onions/garlic for the spaghetti sauce I’m canning this weekend and walked the property for awhile (it’s too cold to do much). I found a few trees I suspect are fruit trees...
That’s a great approach. They’ve cooked down so much it’s a massive reduction in space, even if I just froze it again- you’re right. My intention was to can fresh as the garden was producing, but once production was booming I was so busy in the garden- I don’t know how folks can fresh. I’ll try...
I’m thawing and cooking down last summer’s tomatoes into sauce to free up freezer space yesterday and today. We had 20 gallons of them in there! Planning to can them up Saturday.
Get over myself? The fact that the elderly and sick are disproportionately affected doesn’t hurt my feelings. That people say it as a way to say, don’t worry, it’s not a big deal, only the old and infirm will die in large numbers” is what bothers me. Of course I know my elders are likely to die...
This is a really important topic. Typically after we get sick with a virus our body has formed antibodies that will allow it to immediately identify and suppress the virus if we are exposed again. Antibodies are very specific to a virus, which is why you can catch two different strains of flu in...
I find the comments about it “only being dangerous to older folks and those with underlying conditions” very hurtful as well. Both of my parents, both of my 90 year old grandmothers, and my brother fall into those categories. If anything this makes it scarier to me- I’m likely to survive to see...
