I’ve thought about that where I am. Two beds are currently a pea mixture that should be helping my poor soil. Though I did find aphids in them too, thats where they laid their eggs.
Today, I surveyed my garden. The grasshoppers and ahpids have eaten it. It has never been this bad, but this year we had way too much rain and our winter was too warm. We did not have at least a week of -40° temperatures. Sad though it is, I can plan for next year and research.
So far, I am...
A little gray bug is eating all my flowers. I have been picking them off one by one. It seems to start in the middle of the flower and eat outwards. My potato plants have no flowers left and they have started in on my borage. Any ideas what this bug is? My flowers are all dead.
Today, I removed all my bolting broccoli. This happened last year, so I have pounds of seeds. I think I will do a fall planting to see if I can get some and stick only to fall plantings. The weather is too chancy in the spring and when the heat hits, thats it.
I also added some straw covered...
Last year they decimated my kale. I dug up the bed and put in a new layer of soil, so I dont know. Its when there’s only a couple, but last years were crawling with them. Like 200 to a plant.
They were smaller seeds for the most part. I planted my herb garden. The soil is not up to the surface of the raised beds, so I am hoping they only moved around at most.
I planted seeds over the weekend and now we are having nightly downpours. Is it too much to hope they sprouted some roots before the downpours started and that they will hold tight to the soil?
My garlic is going nuts. I am already looking to order it for next year. I have also been getting emails from various vendors. Who has the best hardneck garlic for the price? I planted regular garlic this year and got lucky with a mild winter. I am guessing I won't get lucky twice.
My husband and I just got 19. They are currently using pine needles for bedding until they get feathers. I am going to swap that into my garden, yes I know pine needles aren't the best option for compost etc., but since my soil has no nitrogen at all, it may add at least a bit.
We also got...
I'm considering throwing some more seeds down, which would mean a 6-year time span, but if they are leggy for the second year, it's hard to know if they will come back next year with more. We have had about four days of rain, so they are doing really well, but I would still like to see more...
We have the pole barn/garage completed on the outside, so we should be able to buy materials and keep them out of the weather now. We are completing the inside of that before moving on to building the house. We did set up a separate solar panel system for the garage and hope to put it up on the...
My asparagus is coming back for the second year. They seem a little thin, though. Is there a way to increase their yield? Should I buy some crowns to expand them? There's only like 20 right now.
So, my spring gardening starts with not just cleaning up, but moving parts of it.
My husband and I got our property a couple of years ago and I built a little garden for myself to start poking around in the soil. Well, after the first year, I knew it was too small and started expanding away...
The first batch of seed potatoes goes into the ground tomorrow! I also hope to
Plant my first spinach, kale, an romaine tomorrow!!!
I also heard that my russet potatoes ship out this next week. It took forever to get here, but I am ready to go!
